Spoilers Spider-Noir discussion thread

Just started watching the first episode.

When Cage makes a deal with the guy for the first time in his office he says he'll do it for "$10/day," the client confirms it by repeating it and Cage throws in, "plus expenses."

I'm overseeing a TNG S2 reference here! ("The Big Goodbye.")
Not really a TNG reference as both that episode and this series pulls from the same classic pulp novels and films.

Anyway, should be fun to watch. Where does it fit in with the MCU? Or is it just in Sony's side of Spider-Man?
The show is in its own little corner and officially this Spider-Noir isn't the same one as seen in Into the Spider-Verse, although I don't think I noticed anything that directly contradicts each other.

Just binged it, though in color because I didn't watch alone and was out-voted.
Boo. Peasants! :p

But, hey, I'm more of a fan of Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe novels rather than the early screen adaptations, and the movie in my head while reading those books wasn't b&w, either. And neither were Chinatown, or the great 1980s HBO adaptation of Philip Marlowe.

I'd have one note, the best adaptations (and stylistic homages, like Chinatown or The Big Lebowski) replicate the first-person narration not by voice-over, but by telling the whole story from the protagonist's POV (not in the camera-sense, obviously), and therefore having them in every scene. That allows the audience to experience every new bit of information with the protagonist/detective themselves. This series, obviously, went a different route, and it's certainly easier with a runtime of 6-7 hours, to have scenes with other characters.
For example, the cliffhanger of episode 5 gave the audience the information about Cat betraying Ben, but Ben didn't know about it yet. in the proper Chandler-style, the audience wouldn't have been present for that scene, and thus would have experienced Ogden's appearance as a surprise, and would only have learned of Cat betraying Ben when Faber revealed it to him in the lab. There wouldn't have been the cliffhanger for episode 5, but we would have experienced the emotional gut punch with Ben in episode 6.

But otherwise, this show was really good, Cage got to go full Cage in a couple of scenes (especially in episode 6), and the rest of the cast was great, too.
I certainly see where you're coming from with the narrative and while I agree the show might have been differently impactful in those particular moments, I still think those gut punches land.

Just finished the whole season and gods what a thrill. As I said before, I love how hard the show leans into the pulp nature (although not entirely in regards to narration, as covered by Kai), playing around and even sometimes subverting the classic tropes.

Without going into too much spoilers, I loved the character arcs for Ben, Cat, and Flint and how their relationships complicated everything around each other while not becoming too soapy. In fact, one of the things I loved about this show was how it often (but not always) allowed the characters to make smart choices and then had outside factors derailed those decisions, instead of forcing those characters to do stupid things for the sake of raising the stakes and driving the drama.

The biggest surprise for me was how the show completely subverted expectations of who he was playing. The trailers made it seem like he was a mad scientist who created The Spider and the rest of the superbeings. Instead, not only was he not the mad scientist but he was actually one of the victims of the German experiments, which lead to his intense aging (but alas, no superpowers). Even Amy Quino's Dr. Faber wasn't a mad scientist, but a broken mother who desperately wanted to restore her son's youth. Kudos to both of them for their superb performances and I only lament that we only got two episodes of them before Silvermane saw to their murders.

...which leads to one of my few criticisms about the season: Why the hell didn't Faber simply tell Silvermane, Flint, Lonnie, and Dirk that she created a cure for them and that she didn't actually create their monstrosities? Yes, she tried to tell them she didn't experiment on them but why not be upfront about what she managed to actually do? This was the one pulp trope that I wish the show hadn't leaned into so hard in order to create that particular tragedy.

All in all, a thrilling season and I really, really hope we got a second season. Definitely one of the best superhero films in recent years.

How's the B&W?

The last relatively new B&W film I've seen was Nightmare Alley, and it was exceptional. I enjoy the film more than the book.

All eight episodes are out now! I won't be able to watch until tonight but I cannot wait!

I've tipped my hand with the photo and the videos, but I'm planning to watch the series in black and white. What is everyone else planning to do?

Black and white. The only way to watch it in my opinion. Ive watched the first 20 minutes and I love it. Cage is perfect for the role.

I'm watching it on my television in black and white, but I just watched the prologue and opening credits of the first episode on my phone in color, and will probably do the same with various scenes throughout the show just to see how it looks.

what a season 1 of spider noir so far

its really really good like it has the film noir from the 1930s vibe

nick cage did some of his trademarked acting styles in some of the episodes

I went back and rewatched some of his scenes in Into and I was wrong. That Spider-Noir is Peter Parker, he fights Nazis and drinks egg creams. So wrong name, wrong time period, wrong drink.

Just finished Episode 1 in B&W and enjoyed it immensely. I am rewatching some scenes in color and I am able to discern different details in the color version. There seems to be a strong use of primary colors in the color design similar to the 1990 Dick Tracy movie (with Madonna, Warren Beatty, Al Pacino). I think I like both for different reasons and will watch them first in B&W and rewatch in color. It was great to see how they translated the familiar character names into their noir versions, some remaining the same, others slightly altered (Black Cat/Felicia Hardy ==> Cat Hardy). I'm excited to see the rest of the series.

Just a note, apparently they used the name Ben Reilly instead of Peter Parker because Marvel has a list of things Peter Parker can't be depicted to do, such as smoking, while Sony can do pretty much whatever they want with Ben Reilly. Also why they call him Spider instead of Spider-Man.
My guess is rights issues are also the reason the dead girlfriend isn't Gwen Stacy.

Both changes for the better, IMO. "The Spider" has a nice 1930s radio serial throwback feel, and even in "Spider-Verse" the character felt different enough from the other Peters that it seemed weird that he had the same name.

i think its because disney owns the entire marvel universe and sony had deals with disney via marvel so that the sony can still continue there verison of spider man and the spider verse

I didn't know that but that makes sense. I'm fine with the lack of Gwen Stacey connection because it wasn't needed and would be in name only.

Yup, that, too.

Well Sony can use the Peter Parker version. Because they own all the film rights to Spider-Man. Disney is basically leasing Spider-Man. The reason they arent using Peter Parker is more that people think if the character name as an adolescent. Ben Reilly isn't known to anyone that doesn't read thr comics so it was a good move. It gives the show a more independent feel now from Spider-Man.

Yup definitely a feel from movies like The Maltese Falcon and Laura and then with a taste of the old superhero serials from the 30s and 40s like Captain Marvel, The Phantom and Superman thrown in the mix. Im only on the one episode but its great. The best show ive seen in a long time. Nicholas Cage is doing a bang up job as the character. So far hes more pulp detective than superhero. I really like that.
