Actually if you listen to the X2 commentary, singer said that the end was formulated late in the game, particularly the decision to "kill' Jean grey. Indeed, he came up with that as something he would really do the day they were filming the museum scene that happens early in the film, and took the actress aside and told her in private. this gave her something more to play, particularly in that scene where she has premonitions of something terrible happening.Yeah the novelization was different to protect the spoilers concerning Jean's fate I think. Again though, it's been a while since they did an adaptation of one of their films. They've had tie-ins and what not.
