Spider-Man: Homecoming' anticipation thread

Well, adaptations have been known to change aspects of character backstory too, often to fit a preferred lead actor. For instance, the lead character in Philip K. Dick's "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" was a timid milquetoast named Quail, but then they cast Arnold Schwarzenegger in the role in Total Recall and he became the manly Quaid. Heck, who wouldn't be willing to rewrite their lead character if it meant getting Idris Elba to play him?

Yeah, it does seem a bit suspicious that Disney-owned Marvel just happened to cast Disney's current favored starlet in such a high-profile role. It makes me wonder if she was really chosen because she was better than all the other candidates.

But then, some actors start out bad and then get better. Ryan Gosling was terrible as Young Hercules, but he's since gone on to become an acclaimed movie star.

Hell, Idris Elba can play me in a biopic if needed, and I'm neonwhite. :D

And I agree, for all we know she turns out amazing. Acting is part natural ability, sure. But there's a reason we have theaterschools/dramaschools. Like any other skill you might naturally have, it still needs to be developed and honed.

Zendaya has been cast as Mary Jane Parker? Hmmm . . . I haven't seen an on-screen MJ since Kirsten Dunst. I wonder if she will portray the character closer to the comic book version than Dunst did.

I'm pretty sure she's still going to be Watson at this point, since they're still in high school. We also don't know for sure, it's still just a rumor at this point. All of the official sources still list her as "Michelle"

They're apparently trying to pass her off as Michelle Gonzales, who in the comics was Peter's roommate/friend with benefits (post the Mary Jane 'breakup,' lonnnngggg after high school). The description of her as 'very smart, very intellectual, always in her books' fits that Michelle's character, who went on to become a lawyer.

Well, in the original comics, Peter didn't meet Mary Jane (or Gwen or Harry) until college anyway. So if the movies can retcon MJ back to high school, they can do the same with any other character.

I hope that she will be someone else than Mary Jane. Marvel is after all playing the long game here, they dont need to introduce all of the supporting cast in the first movie. They can save some for the sequels.

Not really. They called her Michelle. That's the extent of anything they did. Everything else was just speculation.

This will be the second time that MJ will be retcon back to high school. Both Gwen and Harry have been retcon back to high school once.

I really wish that Marvel would just skip Peter Parker's high school years whenever they reboot the Spider-Man title and simply focus on his years in college. Those were his best years in the comics . . . well, for me.

Well half the point of this new Spider-Man is that for the first time he really is a kid in school, as opposed to the previous two versions who were 30 year old men pretending to be teenagers. The name notwithstanding, Spider-Man has always been the character that the readership (mostly kids back in the day) are meant to directly identify with. He's an awkward geeky teen who has just as much problems balancing his home and school life as he does with super-villains and petty criminals.

One imagines they're trying to appeal to that demographic with the movies, not just satisfy older fans who have a particular version they favour. Which is the smart way to go about it since the former are how you grow your audience while the latter are likely to show up regardless.

If it actually is MJ. I gather that hasn't been confirmed.

Both Gwen and Harry have been retcon back to high school once.

There have been other instances for all of them. I think the Ultimate Universe comics put all of them in high school with Peter -- certainly MJ, though I'm not sure about Harry and Gwen. And both the Spectacular Spider-Man and Ultimate Spider-Man animated series have put MJ and Harry in high school with Peter, and SSM did so with Gwen as well (and various other people from Peter's later life in the comics).

Quite frankly, I don't care. Despite the fact that both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were in their late 20s when they first portrayed Peter, I thought they both did outstanding jobs. A lot of people thought so, as well. How else do you explain that their movies were successful?

I'm not interested in seeing Peter Parker regressed back to high school. I don't see the need for it, considering that he has already been established as Spider-Man in "CAP3". But for some reason, the people at Marvel Films cannot shake this image of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in high school. This is becoming redundant and a bore.

Well, to be fair, it was the people at Sony/Columbia who did the previous two Spidey film series.

Also, given that Spidey is being folded into an 8-year-old cinematic universe, it kinda makes sense to have him be a novice hero just joining the club, as it were.

Jon Favreau will appear as Happy Hogan. But I thought that he worked for Pepper now.

In-universe: it makes sense if Tony & Pepper are currently on the outs that Happy gets to play go-between.
Real world: one assumes Favreau is an easier get than Paltrow at this point. Plus Downey & Favreau have good comedic chemistry which is probably what they're going for.

That all said, it's mostly likely only a cameo or something.

It's bad enough that Robert Downey Jr. is in this movie. And now Marvel is including another Iron Man character as well?

Having Tony in the movie makes sense given his established history with Peter in Civil War, and as a way to drive home that this Spider-Man is now a part of the MCU. As for Happy Hogan, he's probably in a more minor supporting role to Tony -- possibly just a walk-on. Maybe there was a scene where they needed someone for Tony to talk to, and Favreau turned out to be available.

^That was kind of what I was thinking too. He's probably just in a scene or with Tony. Even if he works for Pepper now, and not Tony that doesn't mean he can't still be friends with Tony and hang out with him.
