Spider-Man: Homecoming' anticipation thread

I would have preferred her to be a bit older (maybe not 70 or 80, but certainly 60) just because her age is a major plot point in the comics. But there's no reason an Aunt couldn't be her age. At least she'll be very New York, which isn't too bad.

A coworker and I were talking about Tomei's age and how that compares to the comics' Aunt May. Unless Aunt May is supposed to be Peter's great-aunt, it doesn't make any sense for a teenage Peter to have an aunt who's knocking on death's door. My coworker said that early-forties Maggie Gyllenhall would actually be more age appropriate. (Not that there was any speculation about Gyllenhall; he was riffing off the report that she was too old to play a romantic lead against a fiftysomething actor.) Then I pointed out that if we take Mark Millar's Trouble into account, Sony should really have been looking for actresses in their early thirties. Which is to say that the reality of May Parker's age has never really matched the portrayal of her age in the comics. :)

I don't think we'll be seeing Gwen again anytime soon. After all, she's been in more Spidey movies than MJ at this point (if one actually stoops to count the SM3 iteration)
That's three movies each.

MJ: Spidey 1, 2, and 3
Gwen: Spidey 3, Amazing, and Amazing 2.

There was also Felicia Hardy. She came after Pete and MJ were on a break, but she could certainly be in a movie.

^ I was expressing my consternation at having utterly failed at counting in visual terms. :p

If the trailers for the new Vacation, which they wrote are anything to go by, then I'm not either. It's kind of a shame too, because I liked John Francis Daley as an actor on Bones.

Well, if they want to establish a pattern, the romantic interest in the next two films should be someone who appeared in Amazing 2. Felicia Hardy?

Maybe they could use another character. In fact the very first Spider-man girlfriend was Betty Brant (J Jonah Jameson's secretary) who in the Raimi films was played by Elizabeth Banks, and who actually was in the old 60's cartoons. (She still appears in the comics, but more as a good friend of Peter's) He also had a brief relationship with Liz Allen (Flash Thompson's girlfriend, and later Harry Osborn's wife) and of course there was the sort of nuts Deb Whitman. Post-"One More Day", he had a relationship with Carlie Cooper, a CSI, and kind of a 'nerd' like him....but that kind of fizzled out eventually.

However, Mary Jane, Gwen and Black Cat are the 'popular' ones so they're kind of stuck in the adaptations I guess. Funny thing is, Gwen doesn't show up I believe until Peter goes to college (around issue #20 or so) and doesn't really like him until Romita takes charge of the art, and Mary Jane, although sort of a recurring joke in earlier issues as the woman Aunt May wants him to meet, isn't shown fully until Romita's first issue likewise. (Helps that Romita could draw women better than Ditko could-Ditko may have had the more distinctive artstyle but was kind of weird with human faces).

Or they could just create a new girlfriend for him, like the Batman films have done on a few occassions (apart from Vicki Vale and Catwoman who actually are from the comics).

That's a sample size of one.
