SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboot in

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Hollywood is now officially out of ideas if they have to reboot highly successful franchises in just ten years time.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Visually and in terms of action, I have a hard time thinking of what they could do that would seem new and fresh.

But if they could come up with some stronger, more compelling stories, it might be worth it. My only complaint with Raimi was just how lightweight and one-dimensional his stories were. He just kept hitting the same note again and again.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

I think they should leave it at 3, no reboot and move on the the next Superhero.

Isn't time for a Lobo movie yet?

Ah, but Spidey is Marvel and Lobo is DC, so neither Sony nor Marvel are really in a position to make a Lobo movie! :)

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Regardless of the problems with S-M 3 (which Rami had accepted and was making sure not to repeat), this is terrible news. They're going to hire some Yes-Man B-List Director who'll just shoot what they're told to and pack it full of even more emo crap than the last one. (Only it'll be High-School emo crap.) If we're really lucky Robert Pattinson will have finished making the Twilight films by the time they're ready to shoot!

But hey, on the bright side Sony will finally get their wish and the Black Cat will be in this one. No doubt some bimbo from a CW show will be squeezing into a black latex suit later next year.

Hooray?

Another example of Hollywood targeting the "disposable income" demographic. Same thing with X-men First Class. I guess the higher ups figures that high-school/superhero drama would rank in more money with half the budget. I blame "Twilight" for this current trend.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Well, as others have stated, given that Spidey started out as nerdy teenager, I don't think sending him back to high school spoils the character. Sounds more Stan Lee than Stephanie Meyer to me . . ..

Not even -- Spider-Man came out in May 2002, and it's now January 2010. Three movies in eight years, and now the franchise is being rebooted.

At the same time, though, the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon has been incredible, and has done so without resorting to "emo" content, so I really think that a whole new creative team could work. (Spider-Man 2 is the only one of the Raimi films that I really like, anyway.) The biggest hurdle will be selling a high school Peter Parker to an audience that just watched Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst for eight years.

A little ironic with a nuTrek avatar. Anyway, I don't see how it's any less creative than doing a fourth installment of an established franchise.

I simply said: Isn't it time for a Lobo movie?
I didn't mention or imply anything in regards to Marvel or Sony making it.;)

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

And DC still can't make a Superman movie.
This month (or next), Diane Nelson of DC Entertainment (Warner's new "superhero division") is supposed to announce their grand plan for the next wave of DC movies.

Back to Spider-Man, I'm sorry that a reboot was deemed necessary. Anyhow, the next film should skip the details of Spidey's origin. And Peter Parker's girlfriend should be Gwen Stacy.

It's horrifying to think of Sony doing a Spider-Man origin story film only nine or ten years (I'm now thinking that this will be a 2012 release) after Raimi did it. Holy God, the audience confusion will be incredible.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Anyone afraid they're going to get a non-creative director like Brett Ratner they can boss around and control? So that there won't be any butting heads over Venom, for example.

^
Yeah, if that happens I'll start to worry. But you never know, they might pick someone with some great ideas (knock on wood) Maybe the next guy will be for Spidey like Chris Nolan was for Batman.

I don't know about that. I just think that a new origin would be a waste of screen time and studio money.

I'm a little surprised, as I had thought Raimi and Sony could move past creative differences, but I am not surprised at Raimi's integrity: good for him. And honestly, I don't mind a new creative team. Yeah, it would have been fun for Raimi to do another film and leave on top, but perhaps this will be a version of Spider-Man that fans who couldn't connect with Raimi's version will enjoy.

Yeah,I agree I found The Incredible Hulk and Punisher War Zone much better because it wasn't an origin story, despite the movies being "new" from the previous installments. Origin stories are tricky, and hard to do, especially if it's to drawn out. Considering they recently did an origin story for Spiderman, even if the new movie is a reboot, they shouldn't do it again, or if they did, the "origin" is almost a B-story in the movie, the first twenty minutes to half hours to set it all up (if that long).

If we absolutely, positively must touch on Spidey's origin, some Mask of the Phantasm style flashbacks would be cool. I really liked the way that Batman animated film weaved the bits and pieces of his background into the film's story.

I hate to keep referencing Spectacular Spider-Man... but I really like how that started things off. It bypassed the origin, but started out just after where he hadn't met any of his rogues yet.

I think they can do a refresher over the opening credits, giving the cliffs notes version of their origin a la The Incredible Hulk and then just get on with it.

Oh, and as others have said... Gwen Stacy needs to be the love interest.
