SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboot in

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

or the Louise LeTerrier's Incredible Hulk right. Any origin montage could just be done in a opening title sequence.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

The other thing to remember is that the proposed 5 year gap between Spider-man 3 - 2007 - and the next one - 2012 -will not actually be much shorter than most recent reboots.

Batman & Robin - 1997. Batman Begins - 2005. 8 years

Die Another Day - 2002 Casino Royale - 2006. 4 years

Hulk - 2003. The Incredible Hulk - 2008. 5 years

The Punisher -2004. Punisher: War Zone - 2008. 4 years.

And Marvel is talking about rebooting Fantastic Four too. They could be setting something up there. New X-Men, FF, and Spider-Man... along with The Avengers.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

^ And maybe a new Daredevil. But Spidey FF and DD are owned by different studios (well, IIRC Fox owns both FF and DD) and Marvel's own company is making Avengers (and Iron Man & Thor), so don't expect to see them all in the same movie or movie continuity.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

The fact that they're taking Peter Parker back to high school signals to me that it's far more likely to be a 100% start from scratch reboot than a soft reboot in the mold of Batman Forever or Punisher: War Zone.

As for James Cameron, he recently said in an interview that he thinks Hollywood is now making too many superhero films and he doesn't find them that interesting anymore. I doubt he'll sign on.

Edit to add: Clint Morris at Moviehole worked his sources and found out some interesting stuff. It seems that Raimi, despite early studio assurances of creative control, wasn't allowed to come up with his own script. The studio had a gaggle of writers rework Raimi's ideas. Raimi wanted the Vulture as the villain. It was the studio who added the Vulturess (rewritten from the Black Cat). The studio also wanted a third villain. Here's part of Morris's writeup:

The latest screenplay was said to have featured the villain Raimi wanted, The Vulture, but at the request of the studio, the writers (about five were on the project at different times) also added The Vulturess, a new character that Anne Hathaway was loosely in talks for at one stage (she dropped out of the race late last year). There was also talk of a third villain.

In other words, this was going to be "Spider-Man 3 Part 2".

A friend that works at Sony Pictures Technologies – an off-shoot of Sony - shot me an email tonight, after reading my item on the “Spider-Man 4” cancellation.

“Did you read the script man?", he asks, "I mean, it was fucking terrible – it was pretty much Spider-Man 3 all over again. I kid you not, it was just a mess. Seriously. You say people are ‘sobbing’ now, but had this film been made, fans would’ve been jumping off roof-tops!".

He adds, "Basically, it was Peter Parker, in between changing his little one’s diapers, fighting the new editor of the Daily Bugle, who's The Vulture, and Black Cat. They’ve rewritten it since then (Black Cat is now Vulturess), but I believe the gist of the story remains. Or.. remained".

"Thing is, there’s another script – this reboot script, that was completed around the same time as the Spider-Man 4 script. And it’s apparently - haven’t read it myself – much better.”. I called my pal to see if he had any more info but he didn’t, only that the new film will be the first in a new trilogy – a trilogy that’ll be more “Dark Knight” than “Spider-Man” as we know it. “They’re losing the fluff”, he said.

I'm guessing by "fluff" he means laughs... and Bruce Campbell cameos.

The studio was never certain that Raimi, Maguire and Dunst would return for another (the trio had all said, at different times, that it was unlikely they’d be back for another), so they had a contingency plan up their sleeve – reboot.

You know, there have been some griping on AICN and other sites about this, but this might be a good thing. If Disney XD's Spectacular Spider-Man has proven anything, it's that there is some nuggets still to be mined in a high school era Spidey story. I only hope that they just drop the audience right in the action where Peter is well into his career as the wall crawler. And going back to "Spectacular", I hope that some of the writers of that show are brought on board. That has been the best interpretation of Spidey on the small screen in a very long time (probably since the 60's series with the catchy theme song).

I have a nomination for the tagline for the reboot:

"This is not your slightly older brother's Spider-Man!"

:)

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Aren't they supposed to wait until a movie is 15+ years old before they start talking about rebooting the franchise?

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Spider-Man Returns

At this point I don't care about another Spider-Man movie...nothing I am hearing sounds interesting.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

^ Maybe not 15 years, but I would expect more than two. I can't understand why they want to reboot a franchise that pulls in nearly a billion dollars a flick. Isn't the point of a reboot to refresh a dead franchise? $890 million is far from dead.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

So... they better have a good, single villain for the reboot. If it's Green Goblin, Venom, Mysterio, and Lord Zedd I won't watch.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Okay now I would call this a mess...not surprised that after three draft attempts, Rami butting heads with the studio again over the villian that all of this resulted in them just saying fuck it let's restart everything over again. Hollywood is unbeliveable sometimes.

What is wrong with Mysterio?

The others I agree with.

I've no problem with the High School or College setting. Thats classic Spidey. Nerdy, whiney and picked on is classic Peter Parker. He was emo before the term was coined. Sick aunt and girl problems, again classic Soap Opera Spidey. That's part of what made Spider-man work. Stan Lee was a genius in combining Soap Opera and Super Heroes.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Well this kinda suck due to the fact that alot of people were wanting Spiderman to hit heads with Green lantern at the box office in summer 2011.

True but Stan Lee also understood Spidey's audience was growing up and allowed Peter to grow up with them because there were still lessons of life to be learned after High School. That too me is what made Raimi's Spidey/Peter cool, every film was about growing up and learning a life lesson. IMO going back to school turns it's back too those mature fans from the time of Stan Lee. Sony is now only looking to make Spider-Man for teen-agers.

This will be a disaster rebooting Spiderman sure we seen how Peter Parker got his powers in the first Spiderman film.

One of the reasons comics are in the state they are in is because they forgot that Spidey (and other comics) needed to keep getting new/young readers rather than stick with an aging and diminishing audience. The core comics fan is now pushing 30 or 40 rather than 10 or 20. Superman and Spider-man should not be like your mom or dad.

That said, in a movie the characters can grow older as the actors age, but lets not have "Roger Moore" playing Spider-man way past his prime.

With all the wonderful new technology like X-Box360, iPhones & facebook, the younger audience isn't interested in the comic books as much anymore. they have other much more interesting distractions and with art and music programs being underfunded/non-existant in many schools, young kids don't see much of a future in hand drawn art anymore either. Modern kids see CGI as the standard now.

Toby McGuire is far, far from the age of Roger Moore.
