Speed Racer - The Movie

I went and saw Alvin & The Chipmunks at the local dollar theatre today, and saw the preview for Speed Racer. I've thought about seeing this film too, but I dunno, from the preview it may be a bad movie. Not sure if I want to pay full price for it

Anyone else going to see it?

I haven't been to the cinema in over a decade, but I will probably rent Speed Racer if and when it hits Apple TV.

Speed Racer has no name value here in the UK (I gather there are lots of warm nostalgic feeling for it in the US), so going just off the trailer I saw -

it looks like crap on a stick and will be a massive bomb.

It's because I was a fan of Alvin and the Chipmunks when I was a kid. And they did a very good job with this film... more to the original cartoon then I expected. Heck, I paid to see Garfield when it came out. Anything wrong with paying to see kid's movies if you like them?

Of course not. Speed Racer is also a show people liked as kids.



Many are basing their views on the film already due to the high CGI and bright colors they have seen in the trailer. The cartoon itself was like this. I think Speed Racer is closer to its source material then most cartoon,comic,book to film adaptations. Any silliness this movie has is taken directly from the cartoon.

I just can't get excited for this movie in the way that its been done. It just looks like a NASCAR movie dipped in Willy Wonka's factory. I have a soft spot in my heart for it, just like Alvin & the Chipmonks but I didn't see that either. These two just don't look like like good adaptions of things from my youth. I'm sure I'll Netflix Speed Racer I just, as of now, likely will not see it in theaters.

I loved Speed Racer as a kid. I watched it every day.

The previews for this movie look....terrible. I don't like what they're doing with it. Highly stylized crap is how it comes across.

I think it would have been better as a slightly campy homage to the original. A bit tongue-in-cheek, light. Kind of like the Brady Bunch movie.

I highly doubt I'll see it.

Replying to myself here - tonight I want to see Son of Rambow (Excellent little film by the way) and Speed Racer was the trailer.

I have never seen such an immediate and negative reaction to a trailer - "what's this piece of shit", "that looks daft", "what a piece of crap!".

I'm changing my rating from "massive bomb" to massive massive bomb".
