Spartacus: Blood and Sand

^ So I take it, that Season 1 was only a 13 episode order? That this coming episode is the last of Season 1? Any word on Season 2? I had heard that a Season 2 order was placed, but that the lead actor (Spartacus) was found to have cancer. Any news?

Shows on premium cable networks like HBO, Showtime, and Starz typically only run for 10-13 episodes per season, so this season ending so soon isn't really out of the ordinary. Starz had already renewed the show for a second season before it had even premiered, IIRC, but Andy Whitfield is currently being treated for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, so obviously filming has been delayed. I think it was said that they caught it very early on, but I'm not sure whether or not that was accurate. Hopefully he comes out of it okay.

At least they're getting to the slave rebellion in the last episode. It'd be a shame if the show didn't continue, with that bit of history hanging there.

I thought it was 14 eps per season. And we already know it's been renewed for season 2. But I am not too sure about how things will happen because of the lead's health condition.

^^^pretty sure it's 13 episodes, 12 have aired and the one tonight is being billed as the season finale in all the advertisements.

Well, they caught it early, and if you have to get cancer, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is the one you want--it's very treatable I hear.

Holy holy shit. That finale was the best hour of tv I've ever seen. I was literally bouncing up and down in my chair for the entire last 20 minutes. Hands down best show on tv.

When I first starting seeing promos for this show, I thought it was nothing more than another T&A spectacular; Boy was I half right. Little did I expect that a few weeks later I would be experiencing the same adrenaline fueled excitement that I haven't felt since the finale of BSG.

BLOODY good show; Bring on season two. :techman:

Kinda nice when writers abandon probability and let each character have their own private revenge scenes. Very satisfying. I was actually shocked by the Crixus/Xena scene! I did not expect that!

Historically, the rebellion actually started in the Ludus' kitchen. The gladiators, with no immediate access to real weapons, grabbed cleavers and knives. There were no Roman soldiers present, and the Ludus' guards were armed only with batons. The cream of Capuan society wasn't present, hovering around like flies ready to be swatted. And I can't find any reference to say whether batiatus was killed or not (in the Kirk Douglas movie, he survived).

But no matter, this was quite a bit more exciting and satisfying.

I got a big smile when Crixus called Spartacus, and tapped his shield. :)

We don't actually know if Quintus dies. It certainly looks like it, but characters with massive wounds like that have survived before. Hell, look at Crixus. And if there's one trait that Quintus has, its determination and spite. I can see him surviving because of that alone. Lucretia looks like she's going to make it, too.

And there really is no point in being disappointed that the show is taking a different turn from reality. I mean, really, if you were expecting a historical re-enactment, you're really watching the wrong type of show!

Not with their throat cut open like that. Especially not in ancient times.
Batiatus is a goner.
And I don't think Loucretia's gonna make it either. There's no immediate medical attention.

That being said, this season finale rocked.

Nah you can survive some pretty terrible wounds, but Batiatus had his throat cut, which means he's extremely dead dead. Lucretia is less certain, but it seems like her arc is pretty much over and that the tone of the show isn't going to allow for stupid crap like bringing back deadish characters.

/\ I don't care how determined you are, you get a Roman style tracheotomy, you'sa gonna die. So yeah, I would think they'll be casting a whole lotta new non gladiator roles for the next season.

Ashur is still on the premises and may come to Lucretia's aid. Since next season's theme is vengeance, Lucretia could go after Ilithya for having them all locked in with no way to escape.
