Spartacus: Blood and Sand

Even Legend of the Seeker is pushing its PG boundary and showing as much gore, violence, and nudity as possible.

Nudity? Tell me what version of LotS are you watchin'?

Well it's PG nudity, so it's mostly the camera aiming as low as it can without getting the dreaded butt crack or nipple on screen, but the show is clearly trying to push the T&A factor as much as it can.
True enough, but I don't see what's different about Xena and Hercules in that regard.

Yeah, true enough. Those Amazon episodes were awesome.

Anyway, I'm not complaining about the nudity in LOTS; I like the nudity in LOTS. I'm just noting that Raimi makes better shows when he's under some level of censorship. Give him complete control and he gives us fountains of blood, dismembered body parts, and softcore porn. If LOTS was rated 18+ and aired on STARZ it wouldn't be nearly as good as it is now.

So...Episode 10 = Awesomesauce?

I mean really...I knew a certain someone was bound to die a tragic death at some point, but I never would have expected it to happen like this.

That was very well acted, heartbreaking and really tough to watch.

Oh, the moment he made up with his wife and started planning his future, I turned to my waife and said "He's dead."

The manner was unexpected, though.

I'm wondering if the season will end with the slave rebellion, or if they're gonna drag out the ludus chapter for as long as they can. More opportunity for slave sex than with a rebel army.

I'd like for them to keep the Ludus story till at least half of next season, then they should start going towards the slave rebellion kind of thing. My wife has a serious crush on Manu Bennet (Crixus) and the female nudity + action gore makes it one of the best shows on TV yet!

Yeah, I think at this point if they tried to start the slave rebellion by this season's end that things would happen a little too quickly. I expect the relationship between Spartacus and Batiatus to ultimately break down sometime in season two, finally leading to the rebellion by season's end.

It was pretty darn obvious that you-know-who wasn't much longer for this world, but the manner in which they were dispatched was certainly a shock. I'm pleasantly surprised at how much this show's improved from its rocky start.

It was the "Joss Whedon method of telegraphing a character death": Things were working out for _______ in every respect. That obviously leads to death and destruction. :) But yeah, it was shocking the way it happened.

This show is definitely getting better.

Oh heck, that goes way back to WWII movies. "I just got a letter from my wife! We're gonna have a baby! And her father's gonna make me a VP of his firm when I get back! And I only have a week left before I can go home! Bang.

See also the character "Dead Meat" in "Hot Shots."

It probably goes back a long time further than that, but to me, it's the Joss Whedon method. :)

Wow. I just saw Party Favors.

I had read this thread previous to my viewing it so I could guess what's going to happen but I was still unprepared for how it would happen.

I think this thing is taking no prisoners. Since I read the wikipedia entry on Spartacus (DO NOT DO THIS if you want to remain spoiler-free), I have an idea of at least one person (besides Spartacus) who can't die early. But otherwise, it seems to be open season on everybody!

You see somebody who you think is going to be important for the long term and boom - he or she's dead.

I can't help thinking that Batiatus is sowing too many evil deeds. The harvest when it comes, ain't gonna be pretty.

Edit - I am completely captivated by the female nudity too. Who's the new slave who comforts Spartacus?

Oh hell, I've known the whole Spartacus story for decades. The Kirk Douglas film is in my top 10. Just finished rereading the Osprey history. Saw all the history Channel docs. It's well known and quite famous. But that's just his overall story arc. The tv show is not just about him, it's about all the people around him and the minutia of their scheming little lives.

So far I've only watched the first two episodes, and ten minutes of the third episode, but after reading this thread I'm thinking I might have to go back to it. I thought it was pretty good, but I just have a ton of stuff on my Netflix Instant Watch queue that I liked better.

So this is actually somewhat close to the real story of Spartacus? I don't know the story at all, and I had just assumed that they took the name, and slave turned rebel idea and took off into their own story.

I've seen the pilot episode and was done with it.

I don't like shows or movies when their sole purpose is to use extreme shock scenes to lure in viewers. Sometimes i like it a bit "rough" and gritty (liked 300 for example) but a whole series that has to shock you with naked bodies, flying limbs and extreme cursing just seems hollow to me.. take that away and you got nothing.

I'm not terribly familiar with the whole of Spartacus' story, but they're certainly planting some seeds for his future rebellion. The slave class is treated pretty horribly in the series.

There's actually a pretty good amount of substance to the show now. The pilot and the couple of episodes after that were pretty much what you described, and while the nudity, swearing, and violence is still there, as the season's progressed, they've done a pretty good job of actually developing the storyline and the characters. It's still no Rome, but it's definitely improved.

I don't think much is known about Spartacus before the revolt. Probably a soldier, made into a slave. So they're making this shit up as they go so far. Fellow gladiator Crixus is a real, historical person. The Ludus at Capua is really where they trained, and Batiatus was really the name of the owner (though they changed his full name for some reason - it was correct in the Kirk Douglas film). Marcus Crassus did indeed exist and was instrumental in military action against the revolting slaves. (Revolting slaves - heh, well, they didn't bath often!). Otherwise, yeah, it's a lotta made up characters and stuff.

Crassus is the guy who was Spartacus's commander when he was a soldier?

After seeing the latest episode, if only it was tradition that the transition from boy to man would be christened by a sexual encounter with the likes of Ilithyia.
Drewllllll....

No, Crassus was the general who hunted him down after the rebellion. Pompey takes the credit, but Pompey and his legions just showed up at the last minute and helped with the cleanup. :)

No one really knows what Spartacus did before he was a slave. At least according to what I've read.

I recommend this book for a quick edumacation on Spartacus:
