Sonya Gomez

She was an klutz but she was sweet and hot. Spilling coffee on the captain was stupid... the writers could've done something else to indicate she was "book smart" and not "street smart" without making her look like an idiot. She would've made a great Assistant Chief Engineer if they'd written her character differently and had tons of options (potential love interest of LaForge, someone to take over if LaForge were injured or incapacitated, etc.).

I still cringe whenever I watch "Q Who" and see Gomez spill the coffee on Picard. What an utterly awful scene. Rather than making me (the viewer) sympathetic to the character for being a bit klutzy, that scene made me wonder how she got through the Academy if she was always spilling hot (and potentially hazardous) liquids on her commanding officers.

I suppose, if she had stuck around, she could have made for an interesting right hand woman for Geordi, but that probably would have taken away from his interaction with Data. As for Gomez being a love interest for Geordi, I just cannot see it working in any believable fashion. Geordi dating someone under his command? No, sir.

TNG just really had no interesting in recurring characters other than Guinan and Ro and Barclay (I can't believe I forgot him). And ocassionally O'Brien. So I think they didn't want to bring her back. They just weren't into recurring characters.

I don't think an abundance of recurring characters is necessary for episodic television. With stories being limited to one week, generally, the main cast can handle most of the plot while a guest actor can be written in specifically for that story. In TNG's case, trying to cram in recurring characters would just retard the development of the main cast, or make writing more difficult by forcing the writer to jam a recurring star into a role s/he may not be suited for.

Actually, I'm going to change my mind and say this would have been a nice element to Voyager. Having a set of 20 or so recurring minor characters would have made it feel more isolated.

I wonder what she looks like now...
Just googled her. She's still looking quite good:

Wow! I think she's even more attractive in these photos than in 1988.

So, seeing her have an accident once means she did it to every single commanding officer she ever had?

I think Picard assigned her to cleaning out plasma conduits till she got the hell off the ship.
