Sonya Gomez

She was an klutz but she was sweet and hot. Spilling coffee on the captain was stupid... the writers could've done something else to indicate she was "book smart" and not "street smart" without making her look like an idiot. She would've made a great Assistant Chief Engineer if they'd written her character differently and had tons of options (potential love interest of LaForge, someone to take over if LaForge were injured or incapacitated, etc.). I hate it when characters "disappear," as in their character is never written back into a future episode for no reason. They did this sorta with Shelby and I would've given my left arm to have her show up in a future episode.

Shelby's disappearance made sense. Her role as the first office was only temporary (though had Picard not been saved it probably would have been permenent). Gomez does simply disappear without a trace; though it's a big ship and I'm sure there are lots of crew rotations, so it doesn't bother me that much either.

Not just Gomez, but there is a whole arc of characters that TNG could have kept bringing back and forth...

The science team that Wes works with.
Ensign Sito (she could have done more episodes, making her deaprture more tragic)
and a whole bunch of others... Would have been nice to have seen a bunch of Junior officers... and frankly this would have worked nicely when officers were lost (left show) because you would have their replacements ready. It really didn't make sense to keep the same senior staff together for 15 years.

TNG just really had no interesting in recurring characters other than Guinan and Ro and Barclay (I can't believe I forgot him). And ocassionally O'Brien. So I think they didn't want to bring her back. They just weren't into recurring characters.

She would have made a good continuing supporting character. Maybe that wasn't enough to keep the actress, or something like that. There's only so much room on the main bridge.
She does set up some character development for Geordi which continues, his being something of an anti-Kirk with the ladies.

I think it goes into the heart of this thread, really: if a guest character acts like a main character, then that by the above definition is Mary Sue...

Timo Saloniemi

Not by a long shot. See Guinan and Barclay.

Besides, Gomez didn't solve any problems to inherit that name. She spilled coffee on the captain and lost it a bit when things got tough. That's pretty much all she did.

Well, there you go. She was canned after a terrible first day on the job. ;)

Actually, she spilled hot chocolate on the captain. :)

Also, this is the actress that played the triple-breasted whore in "Total Recall".

You can thank me later. :D

I've been in love with Lycia Naff since I first saw her on Fame, and right thru her brilliant 3-breasted hooker on Total Recall. I was delighted to see her join the TNG cast, and crushed when she disappeared.

I actually fell in love with her when she was on GENERAL HOSPITAL (she was Decker Moss's girl friend)...she was very sexy..I wonder what she looks like now..

Just googled her. She's still looking quite good:

But the question that needs to be answered is WHICH of the 3 breasts was the fake one? Or were they all fake applied on top of her real ones?

Are you serious?

Of course this is a trick question. Lycia Naff has 3 breasts in real life, something she was really self-conscious about until Total Recall where she learned to accept them and be proud of them! Good for her! :bolian:

Ah, Lycia. I remember her as Gomez but also as the lovely bad girl in the two episodes of The Flash she appeared in.

She was the girlfriend of the guy who killed Jay Allen, Barry's brother in the series. Barry gets his powers and then takes the guy--and Lycia's character--out.

She was quite sexy in that leather outfit in those days and she filled out the TNG jumpsuit nicely.

And I see on IMDB that she's still quite beautiful.

I wouldn't mind inspecting her warp core, if you get my particle drift.

You know, I forgot about this comic

I've got it upstairs somewhere. I remember it now, because the likeness was nothing like her.

I'm trying to remember the plot - they were working on an old constellation class starship (a recurring theme in TNG?), which she had to take command of when Geordi got knocked out (another recurring theme...) :D

She was in an episode of Hunter, too, as one of those druggy chicks who really isn't a villian, but is the villian's girlfriend, and doesn't want to hurt anybody but ends up causing trouble. Ah, the 80s!

I don't think an abundance of recurring characters is necessary for episodic television. With stories being limited to one week, generally, the main cast can handle most of the plot while a guest actor can be written in specifically for that story. In TNG's case, trying to cram in recurring characters would just retard the development of the main cast, or make writing more difficult by forcing the writer to jam a recurring star into a role s/he may not be suited for.
