Sony Spider-Verse discussion thread

No. Relaying what I heard and expanding that the subsequent delay gives it credence.

The rapper Bad Bunny will star in Sony/Marvels “El Muerto.”

https://variety.com/2022/film/news/el-muerto-marvel-sony-1235240517/

Known as Juan-Carlos Estrada Sanchez in the comics, El Muerto is a wrestler whose powers are handed down by ancestry in the form of a mask (which, according to Marvel’s official site, gives him superhuman strength). In past comic narratives, El Muerto has gotten in the ring with Spider-Man himself. On stage at CinemaCon, Sony brass suggested Ocasio will portray an antihero on the verge of inheriting his father’s power.

Finally, some Sony Marvel news to get excited about! I'm counting down the days.

I have been reading Spider-Man comics since 1978 and I have never heard of this character.

Morbius has headlined multiple comics, appeared on TV and in games and no one cared. I can't see Kraven the Hunter doing any better and people have heard of him.

So the idea that this is going to be something people want to watch is beyond delusional.

Just sell the rights back to Disney.

The idea that the success of a project is dependant on how well known a character is/whether people are 'asking' for the movie is provably wrong.

Guardians of the Galaxy. Suicide Squad. Joker solo film. Aquaman being the highest grossing DC character. Not to mention stuff like Star Wars or Avatar.

There's no reason Morbius couldn't have worked as a movie if people had simply believed, based on Sony's track record and the movie's marketing, that it would be a fun/interesting vampire movie. (And if it had actually been a good enough movie to have good word of mouth). And while I've never heard of El Muerto, glancing over his story I don't think anyone would bat an eye at that story being greenlit for a movie if it wasn't a Sony Marvel movie, but because it's Sony Marvel people are automatically against it from the start.

The problem is Sony's reputation and poor execution, not the characters. (Although Sony's insistence on ignoring more popular characters like Miles Morales, Gwen Stacey, etc, is also part of their poor reputation).

Sony's driving motivation when choosing characters seems to be ones that they won't have to spend much money on. Morbius only had a 75m budget, and I wouldn't be shocked if Kraven and this cost even less.

Even the Venom movies weren't that expensive, but people actually wanted to see them.

Madame Web seems to be a different case as it's got Marvel Studios coproducing.

Actually, their motivation in this particular case seems to be that they really think this Bad Bunny guy is going to be a really big deal within a few years and they want to keep him on their payroll. It seems their main reason for making El Muerto is because this guy wants to do a movie of this type and they let him look through the list of characters they had the rights to make. He said he wanted to do this one, apparently.

They're probably thinking less money = big pay off with all the unfamiliar characters eventually teaming up

They've already got Keaton and Leto together.

The only problem is their movies aren't so great so I'm not expecting the huge Avengers level team up to be that great either.

I have to give Sony credit for one thing. As long as they keep making bad movies of characters I don't know of or care to know, the movies are a lot easier to ignore!

They're not ruining the good ones just yet. See? Positive thinking.

Bad Bunny is a big deal already -- in the music world. The question is, will he fade out of popularity by the time this movie gets made? (I.e. will he be like Sean Paul from a few years ago, where he was teaming up with a bunch of other popular singers all in a row, but then a couple of years and thereafter, no one seems to have heard from him)

if this were Marvel proper, i would expect this find a real audience, maybe even be a surprise breathrough hit.

But with SOny....? We'll see...

Yup, that's exactly how I feel. I've never liked Venom or Morbius, and while Tom Hardy's casting almost got me interested, it wasn't nearly enough to actually watch it.

I went to see the first Venom mostly out of curiosity and it was... Okay. I think it would have gotten a better reception in the pre Iron Man / Dark Knight days. I didn't care for it enough to seek out the second, even with Woody Harrelson as Carnage. I did seek out the post credit scene on YouTube because of its supposed relevance to No Way Home, but even that turned out to be minimal. Oh well.

I remember the story this guy was in...back in 2007 or 2008 I think. He was a Luchadore Spidey fought in a wrestling match.

And if you don't understand the reference I highly recommend the film "Undercover Blues" which is a ridiculous but fun comedy about a spy family. And I find it to be hilarious.

So, spend less money, in order to make more money.

So, business. Good for you, Sony. Hopefully it works out.

I would imagine the Sony boardroom is something like this:

Amy Pascal: So it's decision time. We can either make one movie with Miles Morales, a character people know and want to see more of, or two movies with names we draw from The Big Bucket Of Spider-Man Characters We Have The Rights To. Any thoughts?

Sony's Head of Finance: Well, it seems pretty clear to me. Two movies must equal twice the profit. Right?

Amy Pascal: Great. Let's see who we get this time.

*rummage rummage*

Amy Pascal: First up is The Kangaroo. We should be able to get one of the other Hemsworth's for that one. And then we have...

*rummage rummage*

Amy Pascal: Yessss!!!!Timothy Harrison*. Somebody get Jacob Tremblay's agent on the phone.

Sony's Head of Finance: Um, won't it cost a lot to get Tom Holland in that movie?

Amy Pascal: No problem. We'll just change it "The kid Who Collects..."

*rummage rummage*

Amy Pascal: "...Hypno-Hustler." I smell an Oscar!

*If you knew who that was without Google you've read too many comics. ;)

I turned in my Youth Card a few years ago so I will take your word for it. These days I'm happy just to have heard of the artist let alone their music.

The Venom movies are fun lazy afternoon or late night fodder but I don't really see them as compelling to see in the theater. I do like that there's a spiritual successor to those 90s style movies, stuff like Spawn or whatever, a bit more B-movie type take on comic material where you can imagine people behind the scenes saying "awesome" or "extreme" at some point in their discussions lol.
