Sony Spider-Verse discussion thread

What strikes me are the reviews that's say that it it feels like a pre MCU superhero movie, one that has ignored the strides that the genre has made since the first Iron Man. That reminds me very much of the two Amazing Spider-Man movies, which sadly tells me Sony hasn't learned their lesson. :(

Not every superhero film has to emulate the MCU in order to be successful.
 
Well, it obviously doesn't seem to hurt box office to do so. However, that isn't what I said or what I meant. The downfall of many comic book movies is that the people who make them treat them like "comic book" movies rather than legitimate pieces of Cinema. It was with the first Iron Man and the Dark Knight trilogy that filmmakers started taking the materials seriously. My feel from these reviews is that Ari Avad once again chose to make a "comic book" movie.
 
All I know of Avi Arad is seeing him on various bonus features on superhero movie DVDs over the years. And he comes across as the most "I don't care about any of this, I do it solely for the money" man I could ever imagine.

That's been clear about him from the very beginning.
 
I forgot that Jared Leto was Morbius, I wonder what kind of crazy method shit he'll do this time? Hopefully it'll be something harmless like hanging out with biochemists.

Leto calls it "method acting," but his performance style is the exact opposite of what the method is meant for. Method acting is about internalizing a character so you can play them naturalistically and honestly, with no affectation or artifice. But Leto's acting style, at least in the two movies I've seen him in, is nothing but affectation and artifice. His performances are broad, hammy caricatures. So as far as I can tell, all his pretense of "method acting" is just an excuse to be a self-indulgent jerk on the set. Either that or he's just incredibly bad at it, putting in all that work and still totally failing at what it's meant to achieve.

Oh, dear lord, I hope this doesn't happen. If Spider-Man is a mere cameo of such a film, then they've completely missed the point of the whole story. Besides, Kraven's Last Hunt shouldn't be Kraven's first appearance. The character needs to be established and developed in his relationship with Spider-Man and then you do Kraven's Last Hunt.
 
Yeah, that is a really weird choice for the character's first appearance.
For it to work Spider-Man's role would have to be a lot more than just a cameo.
 
Well, Kraven could capture / imprison Spider-Man early on, then most of the movie is him doing his "I Am Spider" thing, and then Spider-Man comes back towards the end to capture Kraven? I guess?:shrug:

Which, again, misses the point of the story. It's not just Kraven's story, but also Peter's "death" and "rebirth."

I love this story so I want to see it done properly if it's to be adapted and so far it sounds like they have no idea what they're doing.

Oh, I'm not disagreeing with you. In this situation, I think a best case scenario would be spending the movie establishing Kraven, and then any post-credit sequence have Kraven learn about Spider-Man and be like, "Ah, the ultimate prey..."

That would still be rushing the story, but at least it could give it a little lead in or context.

Besides, like I said, I'll believe it when I see it.
