Sony PSP vs. Nintendo DS

I've had a PSP since launch day and I've enjoyed the heck out of it.

I have about 10 games. They're all the type you can put a lot of time into or fireup whenever. Madden, Tiger Woods, Tekken:DR, Final Fantasy: CC, Chessmaster, ect ect. Most all of these games have been "stuck" in my PSP for months. Not because there isn't anything else out there, but simply because these are games you can play over and over or put a lot of time into. With these type of games I don't really need to buy a lot of titles. My PSP also gets used as my main portable audio/video device. I've watched quite a few television series on the tredmill at the gym or downtime at work with this thing. I don't use the internet radio, but a guy I work with does.

I'm suprised how much my PSP has held up, especially with all the early reports on its quality (dead pixel screens, d-pad, short battery life, ect). I have dropped my PSP countless times, logged hundreds of hours on it and it's never had an issue. Which is ironic because when I pulled it out of the box, it felt like the most fragile thing ever.

Now that it's been out a few years, it may be a little dated (not that much amazingly), but I still highly recommend it. It's very capable, and if you know what your doing just a little bit, you can squeez a lot of enjoyment out of it.

For me personally I prefer the DS, it has far more games that I want to play (and I'll freely admit that I'm a Nintendo fanboy).

There are great first party games like New Super Mario Brothers, Mario Kart DS, Planet Puzzle League, Tetris DS, Hotel Dusk, Zelda Phantom Hourglass, Kirby Canvis Curse, Kirby Super Star Ultra, and Professor Layton. There's also a nice selection of third party games like Chrono Trigger, Meteos, the Phoneix Wright series and the Castlevania series. These are just the games I really enjoyed, there are tons of other great games in pretty much any genre.

I have both, and of the two I play the DS more. I have enjoyed the PSP, but ironically it's the ports and remakes for that system that I've played the most, such as Final Fantasy Tactics: The War Of The Lions, Lemmings, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, Tekken: Dark Resurrection and Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX. The only two new games I have are Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

The DS has the the strength of the Nintendo big franchise releases, such as Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, Pokemon, etc. I've also enjoyed the ports and remakes for this system, with Super Mario 64 DS, Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger the best. There's the plus side of being able to play the GBA back catalogue, and also the battery life is longer.

I have a DS simply because it was for simple puzzle games and such. I figured for a portable I wasn't really into any hardcore gaming for any length of time. It's there in case I don't have a crossword puzzle or book handy :)

That being said I am having fun with Populous on it in addition to sudoku, maj jong and such.

So I went out and got a PSP. It seemed it had more of the type of games I like, more adult oriented shooters, racers and RPG's. I picked up Vice City with it and am loving it. I have yet to play the Ratchet and Clank game that came with it.

Any game recommendations from anyone? What do you think is the best 1st person shooter? What's the best, really adult oriented, rated M game for it?

Thanks for all the replies to this, too. Cheers. :)

Ill jsut say this, you may want to avoid just about any FPS on the PSP. They dont exactly control well lol. There are some good shooters for it though, check out the Syphon Filter games on ths PSP.

Ratchet and Clank is plenty of fun until you hit about the halfway point and finally realize the game is broken. I eventually reached a four stage boss battle that made you go back and repeat each stage when you died before giving up.

I don't know much about the PSP, but the highly-rated Sony exclusives are probably a good place to start -- God of War, Metal Gear Solid. You could also try Grand Theft Auto or Mega Man.

Watch, though--there are two versions of the Metal Gear Portable Ops game. Portable Ops plus apparently has no real single player, and it's the one easier to find. Plain old Portable Ops is said to be better (though it is rarer.)

I own both but much prefer the PSP. It is vastly superior by both graphics and sound. I think the stylus pen and the dual screen for the DS is just a gimmick. Of course if the games for the DS are the ones you want to play, you won't care about the difference in technical abilities. I personally got the DS only for the Final Fantasy games that weren't available on other PS systems and was really amazed at how much more "tinny" the sound is for the DS and how small the screen seems after playing on the PSP. Like I said though, it really comes down to the games you want to play in the end. If you don't have any specific titles you want though, I recommend the PSP.

I own Star Trek: Tactical Assault for the PSP, and it strongly reminds me of the Starfleet Command game series for the PC, which is a big plus. I love the graphics, the actor voiceovers, the gameplay. It feels great, and I get a lot of enjoyment out of it (I only paid $5 for it used). It is my most favorite game, followed closely by Prince of Persia, which just looks great.

J.
