Sonequa Martin-Green is Your DSC Star

JJ Abrams.
Who does get abbreviated to JJA.
It's just something that came to my mind since I'd never seen the other actors referred to with acronyms.
I see it all the time, and assumed nothing would come of me using one, other than maybe someone else picking up on the fact that Sonequa Martin Green has the same acronym as Sarah Michelle Geller, which did happen. And there's someone else in Hollywood with three names who is frequently known by an acronym.

SMG also gets used quite frequently as an acronym for submachine gun. Fun fact.

Anyone who has watched Scott M. Gimple talk for example about Walking Dead would know that you dont necessarily want to believe everything he says about potential spoilers.

We need a new acronym for Sonequa. Ideas?

Why is that a "scary-looking" name?

Or foreign looking?

I think @{ Emilia } raises an important issue. People with names uncommon or unfamiliar to the dominant culture, the White Ear, so to speak, often have their names manipulated or erased to suit the dominant culture's comforts or norms. That's not okay. On the other hand, with that firmly in mind, I do think that fandoms often play with their favorite actors' names in an affectionate way. Who hasn't referred to William Shatner as "The Shat"? Or Patrick Stewart as "PatStew"? But just because those nicknames exist doesn't mean we're exempt from remembering and avoiding erasing people's (specifically POC's) names -- like, "That name's too hard, I'm just going to call you Joe. Okay, Joe?"

I have NEVER heard of "PatStew"...and just makes me think of Pad See Ew (Thai dish)

And excellent point about the WHite Ear, which I also thought of, after thinking about it. My wife's name is Sythera (she's black, with Native American, where the name comes from)...but because people won't remember she will use "Sarah" for phone food orders & the like.

Well this needlessly escalated quickly......I really don't think @The Wormhole being anything but a tad lazy.......which I am often guilty of as well.
"escalated"...? More like educated...

What's wrong with Sonequa? It's fairly unique, and everyone will know who you're talking about.

It was a tongue in cheek play on the KStew tabloid abbreviation for Kristen Stewart I believe.

Yeah, I didn't mean to accuse anybody of anything. It's just something that came to my mind since I'd never seen the other actors referred to with acronyms.

I thought it was an odd leap as abbreviations are extremely common (RDJ being the biggest), but to be honest - I did find it slightly mystifying that throughout the discussion on abbreviations no one clicked on using POC as yet another abbreviation that no one can be arsed typing out.

Acronyms specifically refer to initialed abbreviations that are pronounceable words. That's what the "nym" part means. Otherwise, it's an abbreviation. If it's not initialed, but is pronounceable, it's most likely a portmanteau.

Can we now all acknowledge and accept that studio press releases are pure marketing and consist of a ton of spin and some outright lies, and shouldn't be taken as absolute truth?

On discussion boards for the TV show Elementary, Jonny Lee Miller is often abbreviated as "JLM".

What are you referring to specifically?

What are you referring to specifically?

The most recent example that spawned my reply I don't want to post at this moment as it is pretty fresh (those who know what happened will know what I'm referring too, those that don't might be upset if I publicly revealed it in this thread) but it seems to be the same few posters who constantly state "_____isn't true, the press release said so!" when logic and past history would suggest the press release was bunk.

Like those that kept saying "Fuller is still heavily involved in production, the press release said so."

I'm not sure what we're yelling about either...

....but no company in their right mind would broadcast a press release talking negatively about themselves. "This just in: We're a bunch or arseholes and we don't dispute this!" wouldn't exactly be great PR.

Then I'll just assume whoever wrote the press release did a good job and stay confused! :p

I took a gamble and googled what I thought you might be talking about. Assuming I'm right - In honesty, I think thats a fair mistruth to put out for the same reason neither of us have posted specifics!
