Sonequa Martin-Green is Your DSC Star

And really, the whole thing of the Trek series only focusing on the senior staff is silly, since it means the senior officers are the only ones who do anything. But in the real world, the higher you are in the pecking order, the less work you do. Military or civilian work environments, it's the lower peons who do all the work while the managers/higher ranking officials are usually sitting back watching others do the work instead. And bitching at them to work harder. But in Starfleet, apparently the higher your rank, the more work you're expected to do.

The first thing I thought of when I heard the concept was M*A*S*H, where the commander was a supporting character. Of course, the same is true of almost every cop show in history, where the heroes have to report back to a captain.

Oddly, I thought the same. MASH is my go to example of a militarised show where the lead isn't in charge. Especially since the lead is actively avoiding being in charge!

Stargates a good one too - the leads in SG1 and Atlantis are in charge of their team, but not the project with that line more clear in Atlantis and thrown out entirely by Universe!

DS9 shows that well. No one seems to do any work after a while. But O'Briens team never stop....

I think in Starfleet, senior officers are tasked with carrying out primary mission duties while lower-ranked enlisted do the tedious, but necessary things to keep a ship running. They're more of the support staff while the officers do the more exciting (and sometimes more dangerous) stuff, IMO.

If you're a junior officer in Starfleet, you're basically cannon fodder.
:D

After serving in the Navy as an enlisted service member for eight years and half of them on a ship, that's precisely why I have a hard time watching certain aspects of Star Trek these days.

Tell that to Kunte Kinti.

Agency in that kind of story context is defiance and resistance. You can tell that kind of story really well in organizational or military contexts as well, but it's not gonna look much like the Star Trek that fans always seem to be wanting.

Good point. I should have thought of that one, too.

I only skimmed over the article, but sweet shit, their "reasoning" is that the producer of The Walking Dead made some comment about how SMG will be serving as a Lt. Commander on a Constitution class ship. Scott Gimple is a noted Trek fan, he even went so far as to mention TBOBW as one of his favourite cliffhangers, all he's doing here is flexing his Trek muscles. Proving he is familiar with the franchise and knows it. The comment should be taken as such and not proof about the show. Besides, even entertaining the idea at the moment that this is true, and that SMG is playing the same Number One from The Cage, how would Gimple know? Wouldn't she be violating some sort of confidentiality agreement by telling him, and wouldn't he be exposing that by talking about this in public? Considering the lengths TWD goes to protect its spoilers, I can't imagine either of them being so sloppy.

I saw that article in my newsfeed today and just couldn't take it seriously. Something that wildly speculative is one "what happens next will shock you" from being simple clickbait. I don't see the harm in just waiting for official confirmation of stories and characters than to get caught up in rumors.

If there is indeed a connie in DSC I think it will be the USS Shenzhou not the Discovery. But I don't think that will be the case, I think it just a comment on circumstantial information from SMG toward his "other boss"

Poor Sarah Michelle Geller. She's losing her acronym.
That did occur to me as I was writing my post. I figured context would be enough to clue people in about who I was talking about. And besides, it has been awhile since Geller has been relevant in genre discussions I've been involved in.
