Something Ive noticed about Chekov in the first 3 Star Trek movies

I think Chekov, like Rand, was bounced around because there was no definitive niche. I can see Chekov as a weapons officer but I can't see him as chief of security - he's basically a scientist without a specialism like Sulu (astrophysics and botany). First officer on a research vessel is much more within his wheelhouse. In Star Trek IV, V, and VI I would say his security qualifications were entirely absent. Uhura on the other hand, I could see as a security chief but I don't think Nichelle had any martial arts training to pull that one off.

Downside of not bouncing around is that the characters are left to stagnate. Not much need for Sulu's scientific qualifications when Spock is around. Not much need for Uhura's technical skills when Spock is around. Not much need for Chapel's medical skills when McCoy is around etc.

Anyone else notice that in the first 2 or 3 old Star Trek movies, that Chekov keeps getting injured in some way and he screams?
When I met Walter Koenig at the opening of a Blockbuster Video in Nashville around 1988-89, I asked him why his character got injured so much. He said it was because he was the youngest, the most energetic, and he was a good screamer. :)

When did Walter demonstrate any? All Nichelle needed was a gun and a good right cross.

Sigh. Yep. It had to be George, but he had to ignore the black woman who was actually in the episode. A different time but wow sucks to be Nichelle in those days.

Having just sat through TSFS, I felt she got some of the most memorable scenes in it with "Mr Adventure", who I swore also doubled for some anti-dandruff and hair gel adverts... without her, which even Mr Adventure backhandedly refers to, the plan wouldn't have worked at all.

While the story had its hands full with everyone else, the fact she makes it to the destination unharmed lets the audience create their own subplot, which started out on-screen strongly enough... and how long it took Mr Adventure to get rescued from that closet too... (Yes, the scene where they steal the ship and then promptly destroy it is THE most memorable set piece, but she and Sulu with the "tiny" crack stand out more than what most characters got, IMHO. Scotty's stuff was decent but not as good. And up to the stealing, it's pretty much showing old footage of the previous film to set up the point of TSFS, with some comedy fodder from McCoy - which works but early-TOS movies were far more about genuine adventure and suspense, and not the 4th wall-teetering jokes that have become flanderized, since not just sitcom characters exhibit those tendencies... Then Spock is revived and everyone grins happily. Honorable mention to Kirk taking it to the next level in wanting to save even Kruge in order to point out how wrong he was about Genesis but Kruge was too far gone by that point...)

That said, anyone who wasn't "the big three" got a raw deal for most of TOS' TV and movie tenures, especially after season 1. :( For the most part, but most character development anyone got was in season 1, with 2 and 3 being "the big three". On the plus side, any time there was a gem of a scene, it really was a gem to counter the trope of "Kirk do'eth all", something even TMP has McCoy pointing out - in that the crew know their jobs and don't need to be micromanaged as if Kirk was feeling insecure (but not wrongly so, given the sheer redesign of the ship.)

Nobody was ready for the eels.

'eel drink to that!

I remember the interview with Harve Bennett about Nichelle's reaction to the script. It was delivered to her house via courier - and she was on the phone to Bennett only minutes later. Not happy.

He said to her, "You only counted your pages, didn't you?"

She was puzzled how he knew.

"Please go back and read them."

And then Nichelle was back on the phone, apologising. She loved the script!

I believe that is the last time any TMP uniforms were used. I don't recall seeing any of those 3 in TFF or TUC.

The enlisted/cadet uniforms appear in 4-7, and the engineering suits and security armor are definitely in TUC (a couple "football players" show up after Valeris guns down that innocent pot of mashed potatoes, and aside from engineers in engineering, the spacesuits the assassins wore were mostly engineering radiation suits).

Oh, ok. I guess I forgot about them
