Something I just realized about Lieutenant Nilsson

ITDUDE

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
So, apparently she’s 3rd in command on Discovery, right after Captain and First Officer....
So is it good or bad, that outside of Saru and Burnham it’s not really clear the command structure of Discovery? Who’s fourth in command? I have no idea

I'd really like Nilsson to be first officer. Sara Mitich needs the opportunity to showcase her talent here!

The fact that they killed off Airiam 1.0 and brought her back anyway speaks volumes. Hopefully she will get to do more than rest of bridge crew has been doing up to now.

Who's fourth in command on the other shows?
TOS: Sulu? Nest highest ranked after Scotty, equal rank as Uhura, though his status as command division probably gives him command precedence over her.
TNG: Geordi? Equal rank to Data.
DS9: Likely Jadzia, given she has equal rank to Worf and spent time as Captain of the Defiant.
VOY: Likely Tom, since he was acting XO when Chakotay was in command in Unimatrix Zero.
ENT: Reed? Next highest ranked after Trip

As for Disco, there are four other bridge officers who hold equal rank, Detmer, Owo, Bryce and Rhys. As helms(wo)man, Detmer is likely command division, but then that should have placed her as third in line ahead of Nilsson. I guess whoever has seniority in rank is the next one, and there's no evidence to support who that might be.

Well, in TNG it was definitely Troy after Data, they had whole episode about it (well specifically she was most senior on the bridge, but even with rest of bridge crew still there, it would still be true). And that was before she was promoted to full Commander

Except before she was promoted to full Commander, she wasn't qualified to take command of the bridge, that was the whole point of her trying to get promoted. Also, medical officers aren't supposed to be in a ship's chain of command as per TOS, but then that should also mean they shouldn't be able to command the bridge at all.

Yeah the whole thing doesn’t make sense. If she was Lt. Commander, she’s an officer, and if she’s ranking officer she would take over the bridge when she’s senior officer on the bridge, whether she’s “command” certified or not. But it was a good episode, so that’s fine.

Do think she is #2 and hope she moves up to #1 and get some character exposition. Know nothing about her.. Almost at all.

Reno, Nhan, Stamets, and Culber all outrank Nilsson, but (except for Nhan, probably, who is no longer with Discovery) they are all staff officers who don't work on the bridge and probably aren't qualified. Lt. Detmer would probably be a good XO in place of Nilsson, but she's got her own storyline and they're both equal, with Nilsson likely being a full Lieutenant longer (Detmer was a JG in the pilot episodes).

It might be cool to have her be a no-nonsense, no-info Number One for some episodes (promote her to Lt. Cdr. while you're at it), until Michael inevitably gets her job back.

Line officer vs. support officer. She can take over but a line officer would be more qualified. Certainly we have seen the whole "ranking" officer thing bite ships in the rear end on more than one occasion.

I think Willa might be promoted to Lieutenant Commander and transferred to Discovery as First Officer. Being from the 32nd Century, she has knowledge Saru doesn't. And, on the other end of it, Vance can make sure Willa's keeping an eye on them.
I agree with this. No one on discovery's crew will be first officer. Vance will most likely provide Saru with a candidate, be it Willa or someone else.

Well we’ve seen Nilsson in the captains chair a fair bit this season, so it would seem logical to give her the XO role. If nothing else, we might learn her first name...

^This. But I think a line officer of lower rank would be able to take command over a higher ranked non-line officer (nhan line officer?).

Nilsson will probably be the new XO because otherwise she has no job on the ship, I think she like Airiam before her is the spore drive operator or whatever but that feels like a completely useless position with Stamets and Tilly in the spore lab actually operating the drive and Detmer being the pilot on the bridge.

That also means they'll either kill her off or have her leave the ship to make room for Michael again.

I really hope they don’t go down the wormhole of parachuting in Willa. She’s a security officer so that just makes NO sense. I could accept them introducing an established command officer appointed by Vance but Willa would be stretching things.

Of all the Disco crew, they seem to have been quietly setting up Nilsson for the role over the last few episodes just in terms of little things kings happening in the background and it wouldn’t be a huge leap to promote her to Lieutenant Commander.

I feel like they keep trying to make her a thing, which is a bit strange when she was just a background character last season. Even now she barely has a line, but apparently she's second officer.

Yeah but they’ve avoided establishing or confirming a number of senior roles on the Discovery so perhaps that’s no great surprise.
