Yeah i drew one side, then copy and paste it mirrored(only works if it is symmetrical, small details can be added after wards (I did not do that in that particular orthographic view )to add a better sense of realistic asymmetry to the design(like hatches vents and such). When I do a full asymmetrical idea, I draw it 100%, with no mirroring, but for symmetrical design is more than fine.
It's a really intriguing design, Atolm! It has a nice flow and reminds me somewhat of Ralph McQuarrie's version of the Enterprise in some aspects. Like the stretched out form! It looks really BIG! Could double as a deep space station?
Hmm okay... not what I was thinking originally but I guess it works. Makes sense considering your previous asymmetrical designs I think.
I still don't understand. I need three more diagrams, and a Powerpoint. Maybe put something up on YouTube.
As long as it's a Fed ship, saucer first makes sense, no matter how wild looking it is. If it were another race's vessel, it could easily go the other way.
Flippin' eck! I got that COMPLETELY wrong. I can see how it could go that way but in my head I was convinced it was of 'swept wing' design like the plane in the image below (I cant figure out how to get actual pictures in hear **hangs head in shame** so heres a URL instead) http://www.centennialofflight.gov/essay/Dictionary/wing_types/DI98G4.htm
Sorry mate, I'm not sure what you're getting at here. I was commenting on the fact that I didn't originally expect his design to travel the way his diagram now indicates. I assumed that it went "Saucer-First & Swept-Wing" not "Long-Ways w/ Saucer on the side".
Only problem is, the saucer is not first. It's half way back. The pointy ends are the front and back.
This is one of those situations where the design isn't really improved by turning it on it's head, or side as it happens. The form simply doesn't follow the function as we know it from other Trek ships. Either saucer forwards or saucer backwards makes sense and is a pleasing design, sideways just looks sideways on this one. And yet I still eagerly await your next offering.
I'm kind of wondering what it would look like if the saucer was the center, and the arms spiraled outward from it in opposite directions instead now. This isn't exactly what I had in mind, but close enough for Government Work. Ideally the Saucer would be the central point and the arms would spiral outward like so, but with the tips of the arms on a central axis as in the original design. I wish I had better photoshop skills, but even doing this made me realize just how out of practice I am. Federation: Mandala Class (Posted with the hope of not offending Atolm)
Orientation: North: Front (Bow) West: Left (Port) East: Right (Starboard) South: Back (Stern) I also toyed with the idea of having the ship's keel be a helical structure much like a corkscrew.
I love the Aker-Class but thinking about it any other way than saucer fore or aft makes my head hurt, it looks too symmetrical to move sideways, crab style, for me. I'm in no way flagging the design off, it's amazing, it's my brains fault for not allowing me to visualise it moving 'sideways'.
