Some dialogue is very hard to understand

In-universe, I think Pelia's accent is supposed to be a bit different from a "normal" Slavic accent since Nyota was able to identify her as a Lanthanite by her speech.

I think there's the potential for an argument to be made about Kane portraying a stereotype of Eastern Europeans, but I would want to hear from several (more than one or two) actual Eastern Europeans before I jump to that kind of conclusion.

I will say that some people have just expressed frustration at the presence of an Eastern European accent for being an Eastern European accent, which -- combined with the negative reaction a minority of fans had towards Babs Olusanmokun using his Nigerian accent as M'Benga -- makes me pretty uncomfortable. "United Earth" is supposed to mean United Earth, not the United Earth of America.

...I don't have the issue with SNW but have put on subtitles on other shows such as The Expanse and Yellowstone (accents and all).

To me, this explains it all. It's definitely not something I've noticed with older TV shows and movies.

The music is also often way too loud, obscuring the words.
And M'Benga just needs a gallon of cough syrup, though that is apparently a minority opinion here, as certain people find the hoarse whisperer's voice "perfectly fine"

Due to his penchant for whispering everything, the bad audio mixing, and sometimes his accent, if I didn't watch with captions constantly on, I'd have a hard time understanding about 80% of M'Benga's lines.

I have to watch all shows with subtitles. There's some articles going around about poor audio quality (link below) but I have hyperacusis so I assume I am the problem. Have zero difficulty understanding M'Benga though.
