Soft Focus

For all the griping about the lens flares in the new movie, I'm having a hard time watching the TNG-era shows because of the hazy, soft focus they were often shot in. It seems very dated to me, and gives a flat, bland look to them. What was the fascination with that. At least Enterprise seems to have dropped that.

You want soft focus, go watch TOS whenever they showed a woman. *That* was soft focus!

That's what I thought this thread would be about! And why use soft focus on Mariette Hartley et al? They were hardly old wrinkly hags. I associate soft focus with egomaniacs like Barbara Walters and Anderson Cooper.

Just a convention. When I heard soft focus, Areel Shaw popped into my head with her far-out bar clothing in Courtmartial.

But I agree with the soft look of the TNG era shows. Some lighting, it's really noticable, almost grainy. Or else that's my 1981 t.v.

Funny you mention this. I have been rewatching for a while now, and its bothering the heck out of me as well. I was attributing it to my older DVDs (i am playing them on a blu-ray tho. Picture is stretched. Discussed in another thread, still cant figure out why they are stretched, and it sucks verily).

but yeah, this soft focus is very annoying!

Or when they show Kirk in "Enemy within" when he's questioning Rand. HOLY CONTRAST BATMAN! I guess it was the more womanly side and the manly side was running around knocking over computer consoles and beating up crewmen.

At least on TOS it was used for effect, though kind of silly at times.

It was omnipresent on the TNG era shows. I mean, DS9? Dark and fuzzy? What's the message?
