Soccer Bi-Weekly (15)

I see Avram Grant is getting a lot of stick for saying Chelski should of won, the man is so grumpy :D
What would José Mourinho do?
PS- After a disasterous season, my Killie finally produced a great performance today when we beat Aberdeen 3-1, with a scoreline which flattered the Dons.
From one Dons supporter: Booo! :p

Actually, I still haven't recovered from midweek's thumping at Munich...

They say that the Carling cup doesn't mean much, try telling that too Chelsea and Spurs tonight, I only got back home from work for extra time but it was back and forth action.

Good for spurs winning their first trophey for nine years, and through Ramos efforts, fully deserved.

On a more sombre note I hope that Eduardo makes a swift recovery, that was a horric injury.

Spurs now have the UEFA cup spot since FA decided not to give the normal ones to 7th place however...

ENG are about to win fair play thing so the FA could then give auto place to 7th along with 5th, 6th and FA cup winner.

Congrats to Spurs - as finals go that game wasn't too bad - should be interesting to see if the Spurs board will stick by Ramos or get rid like they did with Martin Jol...

There is still a chance that Eduardo may never recover enough to play again according to doctors ???

what do you think

* 6-12 months

* 1 Year+

* Never Again

???

I am going for a 9 months to a year recovery period. He is a strong kid who is confident about making it back and that is half of the battle already won.

He should be back in about a year.

I remember when Henrik Larsson had a similar horrendous break, many feared he would never play again, or that he would be half the player he was before the sickening injury.
But return he did, still brilliant. And after he left Celtic, he won a Champions League winners medal with Barcelona, and even had a memorable spell with Manchester United!

And I was glad to see Eduardo hold no malice towards Taylor. One would expect him to blame Taylor, and demand severe action. But no, he has proved a much bigger man than most would be in a similar position, saying that it was just one of those unfortunate injuries that can hit any player.
I take my hat off to you sir. And I look forward to see you play again.

Arsenal player Abou Diaby had a very similar, but less severe, break and ankle dislocation. He was out for 8 months and made a full recovery.

Heres a topic I've been meaning to talk about for a while...

Should the Africa Cup Of Nations Move To The Summer?

I can't really decide on this one because on the other hands, majorty of the players do play for European clubs who have to give up these players during there own season but I always felt Country should come over country.

Africa is very hot during the summer so I can understand why they do this and I feel they will refuse FIFA and keep it during Jan/Feb.

What you lot think ?

Keep it during the Winter and make it every 4 years.

I feel that is the best solution. Two years is too short. Euros are only held once every 4 years so I think ACN should be on a similar schedule.

I agree, still a winter tournament, but every 4 years.

And they should not be forced to change just to suit the big European clubs. Indeed, the clubs pay the wages, however, the need to know their place. How long will it be until the major clubs refuse to release players for internantional duty?
Already in Scotland, Rangers & Celtic are bitching about the upcoming friendly against Croatia, and I suspect many Old Firm stars will suddenly pick up a wee injury which will miraculously clear before their next club game.

Yeh I totally forgot it was every 2 years, strange...Any idea why they do that, seems a little excessive IMO. most cups I know around the world work in 4 year cycles.

I think it's an attempt to get the nations hosting the competitions to improve facilities faster, which is something that needs to happen across the continent. Of course it also means roads are better maintained and boosts the economy of the host nation.

As far as moving to the summer goes, I'm for it but it'll be disgustingly hot, and probably hell on the players who come in from Europe and might even be out of shape in the off season. Still, I guess we'll get an idea of how much impact the African summer has on player stamina in 2010.

^ Yeh I have to admit the weather in the summer will be borderline deadly at times for players from colder European players for the 2010 WC. Thats why am so gutted that ENG did not Q/F for EURO 2008 cause we don't have a cat in hell chance of winning in 2010 or 2014 (Brazil) because the climate alone will doom us, not too mention we can't play football:D.

Also I watch the ACON & I can't help but feel that the WC in 2010 will be a dissapointment but I hope I am wrong.

The response to Capello's first game in charge seemed mixed, but personally I haven't seen England play such beautiful soccer in a long time. Now if you guys can just marry that with results I think you'll do just fine.

If you're talking about the quality of the tournament with regards to hosting, then I think that's a distinct possibility, just a few weeks ago Blatter admitted the tournament would probably have to be played on artificial pitches because it's so hard to maintain grass here. Still, I think the SA will sink whatever amount of money that's required into the project as a point of pride, and also because they know it'll do wonders for their image, not to mention the economy.

As for the standard of play, well, that's anyone's guess, I just hope Nigeria can get a decent team together.

^ Well I hope teams play better than they did in 2006. 98 was good and 2002 was excellent IMO but I felt let down in 2006 by a mixture of things...

* The standard of Refs was shocking and ruined matches

* My own country ENG played poor for majorty of the WC and Rooney's injuries spoiled his debut World Cup.

* Diving and cheating was at a high for a WC IMO

* There really weren't as many classic matches or moments as in 98 or 2002.

I think the standard of play at the World Cup has dropped alarmingly over the last decade. While 2002 was exciting, it was however dogged by some of the most blatent bias since Argentina 78 with Italy & Spain being knocked out by Korea and the ref:wtf:, and the Brazil & German teams who contested the final were poor by the standards of those great nations.
2006 was more of the same, although I loved watching Italy lift the cup.
I blame the number of club games European sides play these days, especially with the bloated nonsense which is called the Champions League.
Check out 1982, that was a great World Cup!

As for South Africa in 2010. It could be a great tournament, afterall, they put on a great Rugby World Cup.

CL tommorow...

Man Utd (1)-(1) Lyon

AC Milan (0)-(0) Arsenal

Sevilla (2)-(3) Fenebache

Barcelona (3)-(2) Celtic

For me Man Utd will be too strong and will win 2-1 at home to claim a final 8 place in the CL.

AC Milan will most likely win 1-0, I don't see Arsenal breaking Milan's defence at the San Siro and over 90 or if it takes 120, they should score at least 1. Arsenal best chance will be a sub Walcott late on against a tired/aging team.

Sevilla should be too good at home for the Turks but I do feel this one may go down to away goals.

Barcelona will be far far too strong for Celtic and most likely win by 2 or 3 goals.

Go Gunners! I'm cautiously optimistic despite Arsenal's recent form. I don't think anyone expected them to do anywhere near as well as they've performed this season, when Henri left and Van Persie was injured critics said the writing was on the wall, but they've proved that isn't the case.

That said I think the lack of depth is starting to show, they don't have a natural left footed striker at the moment (poor Edu, wishing him well) but hopefully Walcott can step up to the plate.

No English team has ever beaten Milan at the San Siro, and they're a tough team, but I wonder if they won't be just a little too over confident.
