So, your top 10 stories then?

I almost put "Utopia" on mine, mostly because of Derek Jacobi. He really makes that a great episode.

I like the grand idea of it - let's travel to the end of the universe! Sure, I know that it will end someday in the very far future but I had never thought about what that actually meant. Yet, here in this episode, we have all those people living and raging against the dying of the light - fruitlessly, probably. It made me feel very mortal.

I get the impression some of you haven't seen much Doctor Who.

Really? What gave it away? ;)

I think you will have to live with the fact that some (or even many) fans have only seen the new show.

Blink
Vincent and the Doctor
Human Nature 2 parter
Curse of Fenric
Robots of Death
The Horror of Fang Rock
The Invasion
Earthshock
Caves of Androzani
Genesis of the Daleks

This list'll probably change over time though given there's still a lot of classic Who I've never seen. Utopia nearly made it onto the list, as did The 11th Hour.

^ (responding to Bones' post)

It could be that some just prefer the newer stuff to the old. There's nothing objectionable about that. Just because there's probably three other people in the world who'd actually enjoy sitting through "The Web Planet" (and I count myself as one of them; I like that episode) isn't a sign of the impending apocalypse.

The old series isn't for everyone; I think that nostalgia is the reason most of us still have a soft spot for it.

Yeah, but in this day and age there's no excuse. And it's rubbisher.

Well, it doesn't have much of an appeal to many people, for a number of reasons, while others would rather watch some other drama show than a sci-fi show that ended in 1989. Yet others are somewhat intimidated by the sheer volume of the material and by the fact its partial incompleteness makes it somewhat complicated/frustrating to watch it.

And as for 'rubbisher', well, I've seen the first 9 seasons of the old show and all of the new one, so far, and while I can't really judge those serials which miss most of their video material (and have admittedly skipped a few) I'd say that I've seen at least equally much of the old show as I have of the new show, and yet, my list is tilted towards the new show. I actually restrained myself to give it some balance. I do like the old show and there are many stories I'd classify as good and/or enjoyable but the frequency of stories I'd classify as great is a lot higher in the new show. It's a matter of taste, I guess.

ETA: @shatnertage: RTD once said in an interview that The Web Planet was his favourite story. That was shortly after I had seen it and well, I kept thinking "WTF?" during the serial. It got weirder and weirder with those fucking bees and their sing-song speech and those bugs with their funny movements (or was it the other way around?).

I don't know where you got that from RTD has said that The Ark In Space is his favorite story from the old series.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Holmes_(scriptwriter)

Russell T Davies, writer/producer for Doctor Who's 21st-century revival, praised Holmes' talents, saying "Take The Talons of Weng Chiang, for example. Watch episode one. It's the best dialogue ever written. It's up there with Dennis Potter. By a man called Robert Holmes. When the history of television drama comes to be written, Robert Holmes won't be remembered at all because he only wrote genre stuff. And that, I reckon, is a real tragedy." Davies has also mentioned that Holmes' story The Ark in Space is his favourite story from the original series.

I liked it because of the weird balletic movements and the overall strangeness of it. And the fact that a Zarbi ran right into a camera and that scene made the final cut. There's something almost like an experimental drama troupe about the early shows that I really like, and The Web Planet's a good example of them.

But it's a very, very acquired taste.

Well, it's certainly an experience, I agree. It's probably as close as you can come to an acid trip without taking acid. The Claws of Axos is also good for that - all those colours...

Ok this is not easy....WAY too many good episodes from classic and new. So here is how I will do it...I will pick 5 from classic and 5 from new...and that is really off kilter because there are so many from classic and alot from new who that seem to be picking up rapidly. I will cheat on some and count some of the 2 parters from new Who as one episode...OK....dont slay me for it.

Classic:
Tomb of the Cybermen (not only was it good but definately classic sfi fi by any standard)
The Three Doctors
Ark in Space
Pyramids of Mars
Talons of Weng Chiang

New Who:
Dalek
The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances
Blink
Stolen Earth / Journey's End
Vincent and the Doctor.

I have a honorable mention list will mention it later.

Oh could we PLEASE not turn this into another "My favorites are better than yours!" thread?
And let views like The Shakespeare Code being better than Androzani go unchecked? Is that what you want?

How exactly are you going to "check" their views? If that's someone's honest assessment, there's really not too much you can do about it.

I think our lists have an overlap of only one or two episodes, but I wouldn't try to argue that you're any less "good" a fan of the show than I am or in any way artistically or intellectually benighted. It's just different tastes. Which is probably good, since even the people making the show had drastically different opinions of what made good Doctor Who and what didn't.

Even though some folks' choices wouldn't have made my list, I've got a feeling that if I sat down and watched the episode with them, letting them talk about why they liked it so much, I'd probably understand why they picked it.

Yes there is. I can be all judgemental. And sneer at them.

In my defense, I started watchin' with the 9th Doctor, and while I have watched random episodes of the classic series, I just prefer the new to the old.

That's why my top ten were all 9, 10 & 11's episodes.

Like Mr Gibson going across all media.

1. The Curse of Fenric
2. Alien Bodies
3. The Five Doctors
4. The Holy Terror
5. The Moonbase
6. The Daleks' Masterplan
7. The Talons of Weng-Chiang
8. Rose
9. Loups-Garoux
10. The Smugglers

Cutting down to ten is near impossible though...

1. The Mind Robber
2. The Tomb of the Cyberman
3. The Edge of Destruction
4. The Three Doctors
5. The Two Doctors
6. Attack of the Cyberman
7. Vengeance on Varos
8. The Chase
9. The Five Doctors
10. Castrovalva

I've been thinking hard about my top 10 but now that it's clear this is yet another thread set up by Bones so he can sneer about other peoples tastes I'm not sure I can be bothered anymore.

Hey, some love for The Chase! I approve. :techman:

Aw, don't let that deter you, there are also other posters in the thread aside from him.
