SG1 borrowed heavily from Star Trek. This borrows heavily NuBSG. So, I guess evolution is a good thing.
I've only seen one episode, and I thought it was very good. I was actually pretty impressed with it, surprisingly so. I've never been a Stargate fan. Ever. To me it was just Star Trek with Army guys and no ship. The production values were below average. The characters were generic. To say nothing of the acting. I gave it a chance and watched the first two seasons but just gave up eventually. To me it was the epitome of by-the-numbers, cookie-cutter Sci Fi TV. A step above Adromeda. But two steps below NuBSG, Farscape, and Firefly. I did see the first episode of Atlantis, and thought it was a slight improvement. But not enough of one to keep my interest. I always thought the franchise was completely unworthy of it's large fanbase.
But I like this show. The acting is solid. Which shocked me to see good acting on Stargate of all things. The production values are good. Taking a page from NuBSG, the writing is darker, crisp, and makes things feel more real. Unlike NuBSG, the character conflict isn't just for the sake of character conflict and is compelling because it actually makes logical sense. But unlike NuBSG, the characters aren't written to be cartoonishly fucked up as an intellectual statement meant to disguise an over-the-top "Fuck You!" to Star Trek. I like the fact that all the problems they have aren't magically resolved at the end of every episode, and in fact seem to get only worse with the next installment. You'd never see that on SG1.
I like the characters. The Colonel is no bullshit, career military. Definitely more Adama then Jack O'Neil. Which is awesome, because I just couldn't put up with those awful jokes. Carlyle plays the arrogant, brilliant douchebag without making it a seem like a cliche, unlike the guy on Atlantis. And the nerd kid manages to not get on my nerves. Which is incredible, because that type of character usually does.
So I will check this out and see where it leads.
