So what will Paramount do when Star Trek XI tanks?

There's an over abundance of that thinking around these parts, people declaiming the certitude of this films failure even before it makes it to the screens.

They will exist in denial if it does become a smash out hit and should it do as they are going out their way to tell us it will they'll proceed to wallow in that failure as a victory.

I really can't wait to see the website that will be put in place calling this "Fake Trek" or some such foolishness.

Sharr

Is it too early to start calling it TINO?

"Trek In Name Only" - it's a joke, borrowing from the "GINO" acronym that some fucktards lifted from "Godzilla In Name Only" and applied to the new "Battlestar Galactica."

Star Trek light.

Riiight. I like what I see so far. Bring it on.

Trek will smash everything in sight. Besides I think most Christmas movies turn out sucky anyway. So not only will Trek be a blockbuster, but the lack of true competition will makes it even bigger in the Boxoffice.

Sounds like you want this film to fail.

Nothing could be further from the truth. I have criticised those who take shots at every bit of news announced about the film, have written positively about several aspects of the film, such as the casting of Eric Bana, and will be making arrangements to attend the premiere on Boxing Day in Melbourne. I love Trek in general, I love modern Trek, and would love it to be successful once again. That doesn't mean I can't be realistic, if somewhat pessimistic, about it.

Like it or not, fans are still going to be the sizable audience.
Then we are fucked. May as well stop now.

Not at all, assuming that unlike Nemesis (or TV's Enterprise), J.J. Abrams makes a high quality film that appeals to them. There's no reason it has to exclude anyone else from seeing Star Trek, but they are going to be the primary audience.

And if all 2.5 million of us go on opening weekend, that's $25 million or so gross = flop on the order of Star Trek Nemesis. As has been stated aboved and re-quoted many times:

If the 'hard-core' fans are the core audience the film is fucked, and they may as well cut their losses now.

Star Trek: Nemesis DID NOT tank because Lord of the Rings opened on the same weekend; it tanked because it was a BAD film; and it didn't appeal to general audiences BECAUSE it was just a BAD film.

If Star Trek XI is a good and entertaining film that appeals to a wide audience, it will do well REGARDLESS of what any 'hard core; Star Trek fans think.

I find the ST fans I choose to hang around with are generally optimistic, about ST and life in general. ;)

:D And it's not a bad way to live. Unfortunately, I was optimistic about Nemesis, I was optimistic about Enterprise - hell, I greatly enjoyed both - and that didn't equal commercial success. My fear is that the same will happen here, especially with the need for it to outperform every Trek film in history just to make back its budget! Still, I hope it will.

If it tanks, it means they tried, and failed.

But it was dead already. I for one had no interest in "the franchise" even before Nemesis came out. Now I'm willing to give them a shot.

Can't blame them for trying.

If this film actually tanks, though the chances are small (really, look into it), I'm sure Trek will go into another winter period. A before ST:TMP time frame.

Whats Abrams thinking of those uniforms? I think we need to write CBS.

Mike

Those uniforms? I'm assuming you're talking about the few costumes we've seen in those fuzzy telephoto shots?

I'm betting that Abrams was thinking those costumes were appropriate for the scenes he was shooting that day. But since we don't know what scenes he was shooting on the days those pix were snapped, nor what setting or time frame those scenes depict, we have no idea if those costumes are meant to be Starfleet uniforms from one era or another, cadet uniforms, off-duty garb, or civilian clothing.

Thus far, there's nothing known to complain about costume-wise.

And even if there were...why the hell would we want to write to voice our concerns to a television network that isn't involved with, or have any control over, this particular production?

Actually, "Nemesis" opened in the USA on the same weekend as J-Lo's "Maid in Manhattan", and it was "Maid in Manhattan" - a supposedly really bad film - which beat "Nemesis" for that week's Best Opening Weekend. Embarrassing.

I might point out, though, that "Nemesis" won the Best Opening Weekend slot in Australia a few weeks later, and several European countries. And the first version of its DVD was the top-seller in the USA in its first week of release.

Yes indeed.

Nemesis tanked because the general public didnt find the idea of another Next Gen film appealing and so did it seem did the fans. It had nothing to do with it being a bad film or a good one as no one knew what it would be like until it came out.

If this next one tanks Im pretty sure you can see anything Trek going bye bye for probably the next decade which could also see a decline in the ammount of stuff the franchise puts out; toys, books ect and then you will bitch and moan that its gone but really you should have gone to the cinema given it a chance and if u hated it complain like you will anyway!

but at least you going and paying a fiver will have left the door open and given it a chance

And ya know even if you dont see it, it does well and loads of people see and watch it and you hate it....what are they gonna care about you, you love old star trek not the new one

More like, it sounded rather lacklustre in the trailers and by word of mouth, especially when new ST could be found for free on TV every week.

It had nothing to do with it being a bad film or a good one as no one knew what it would be like until it came out.

It got terrible professional advance crits, and even word of mouth was bad because, like "Insurrection", the entire script - and even earlier drafts - had been posted on the Internet within days of filming commencing.

what are they gonna care about you, you love old star trek not the new one

I love/like all/most Star Trek and I love "Lost", too, so I trust I will enjoy JJ's ST too.

All Im saying is have an open mind, plus critics cant be listned to all the time, Im still on the fence when it comes to Nemisis, cant decide if I like it or not.

As for the new film I think everyone should be open minded at least untill the trailer comes out and we can try and make sence of the feel of it

Re: So what will Paramount do IF Star Trek XI tanks?

^ Took the liberty of correcting that, since the original poster seems under the impression the movie's failure is a forgone conclusion.

"Optimism, Captain!"

Re: So what will Paramount do IF Star Trek XI tanks?

If Trek 11 bombs then it is 99.9 % certain to be all over.
It will all lay dormant for about 5 years and then maybe a new show could be produced. Too many people are watyching all the DVDs of the 5 programs.
