So what was MacGyver anyway?

"Troubleshooter" is the best word to describe MacGyver's job.

Not really, because it's too suggestive of guns! :p

Not in the way the word is actually used:
trou·ble·shoot·er [truhb-uhl-shoo-ter]
–noun
1.
a person with special skill in resolving disputes, impasses, etc., as in business, national, or international affairs: a diplomatic troubleshooter in the Middle East.
2.
an expert in discovering and eliminating the cause of trouble in mechanical equipment, power lines, etc.

So despite the sound, the word "troubleshooter" means someone who solves problems in a constructive way, either through dispute resolution or through mechanical repairs. Sounds like a good fit to MacGyver's work.

And I'm pretty sure that there were times when MacGyver identified himself as a troubleshooter.

You did see the smiley, right? :p

What was MacGyver?

A Bad-Ass MoFo, that's what.

Just ask Patty and Selma!

For years I thought this was a fictional TV show invented to be referenced on the Simpsons.

However... I've never seen the acutal relevant series. Nor have I desired to. After all, if Kelsey Grammer reads lines of a homocidal maniac who indicates a dislike of it, do I really want to give it a chance?

Who or what is an Epic Beard Man?

ehh just another youtube sensation.

Basically a 70 year old vietnam vet named Tom beat up some thug dude on a bus, after the thug dude accused him of being racist, and so friends of this thug dude caught it all on their video phone im assuming. i only just mentioned him because he's the latest "sensation" but its all really just trivial BS that doesn't really apply to anything, especially a thread about MacGuyver of all shows.

see for yourself

side question

who was MacGuyver's nemesis again? Was it the pyro/chameleon guy named Murdock?

Yeah, it was Murdoc, although his first apperance isn't until the second season and he generally only appears in one episode per season I think.

yes, give it a chance. one of the greatest shows to come out of the late 80s/early 90's in my opinion.

MacGyver's arch-nemesis was Murdoc (no K), played by Michael des Barres. He was the kind of archvillain who always appears to die at the end, yet always somehow turns up alive later on.

I don't know, I'd say it's predominantly cheesy as hell. But Richard Dean Anderson is pretty charming in the role (it might be blasphemy, but I think he's a better MacGyver than a Jack O'Neill), and his use of science and ingenuity to solve problems is a refreshing change from television norms where action heroes almost always end up shooting their way out of dilemmas.

It gets better once the Phoenix Foundation is introduced and Dana Elcar and Bruce McGill become key supporting players. But, from what I've seen (mainly, seasons 1-3) it's never going to be mistaken for being from a decade other than the 1980s, and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

It's probably only good for camp value these days.

Have you seen The Simpsons episode Richard Dean Anderson appeared in? Pretty good stuff.

:techman:

"So what was MacGyver anyway?"

Pure Awesome

It's a substance found only in the Richard Dean Anderson nebula.

I did!
"Richard Dean Anderson, of the four Star franchises: Wars, Trek, Gate, and Search, Gate is easily in my top three!"

"I get that a lot."

The show itself is really the quintessential 80s series. The good guys are good, the bad guys are eeeeeeevil and work behind the iron curtain oppressing freedom-loving natives who worship America. Go USA! Seriously, the show is a great example of what 80s television was - filled with heart, earnestness, and good triumphing over evil. It's awesome! :D

Funny how MacGyver reveled in his intelligence and ingenuity while Jack O'Neill is a self-proclaimed know-nothing.

Also Mac hated guns while Jack uses them constantly (though he has plenty of reason to hate them considering what happened to his son).

Anderson's best role, however, was the one that came between MacGyver and O'Neill: Ernest Pratt in the Michael Piller series Legend, which ran for one 13-episode season in the late '90s. That was a great character, just as much the anti-MacGyver as O'Neill was: a dissolute, drunken, womanizing, gambling dime novelist in the Old West, sort of a cross between Mark Twain and Oscar Wilde, who was constantly mistaken for his clean-living, heroic character Nicodemus Legend (because he posed for the cover portraits) and was pressured into reluctant heroism by Janos Bartok (John DeLancie), a steampunk inventor based on Nikola Tesla. That role really showed off Anderson's skills as a character actor far better than MacGyver ever could. And it was a great show too. It's a shame it didn't last longer, though if it had, someone else would've played O'Neill.

I had forgotten that accidental gun death of O'Neill's son.The wiki-based bio of MacGuyver featured a similar incident too.Odd coincidence.
