So what if George Clooney's movies aren't successful and ...

... make lots of money ... I still like to see them.

(Taken from GWR's thread)

I watched Burn After Reading 2 weeks ago, and I could not imagine how Clooney could stay on top with these films that few people watch when they are in theatres, and only endup Netflixing or renting from the Blockbuster overstock new release bin a few months later?
Burn After Reading has been on my list of films I want to see, for at least 2 or 3 months. I love when Clooney plays dumb, as it's great to watch. It seems always enjoys working with great directors (the Coens, Soderbergh)
Gimme a break...his career should have remained in television after Batman & Robin tanked, but he and actors like Colin Farrell continue to headline films by being propped up by the Hollywood hype-machine. These guys could have 10 bombs or disappointments in a row, and still be considered major movie stars.

So two Oscars for his acting (Syriana and Michael Clayton) and several other nomainations don't count for acting and directing. These films may not be successful at the movies, as they don't suit everyone (due to some films having language and/or violence)

I regard Clooney in the top 5 of my favourite actors. Many of his films I'll either see at the movies or will catch up with on DVD.

The guy's one of my favorite actors. He's very natural and smooth. I still think the bar scene in Out of Sight is one of the best "erotic" scenes in modern movies. Syriana was a great flick, I remember catching it on opening day and grabbing the DVD on day one of that as well.

My mom, who cares little for movies and falls asleep during them 95% of the time, loves George Clooney and will pay to see any movie he's in. She saw Burn After Reading only two days after it came out and raved about it. I don't blame her, he's a good actor.

I loved O Brother, Where Art Thou?. Erm, is it correct to end a statement with a period after a question mark when the question mark is part of a title? Whatever.

Clooney isn't just hyped by the Hollywood machine because he's charming and good-looking. He's very politically/socially involved and extremely well-regarded by his peers.

George Clooney has certainly made his fair share of stinkers, but to accuse him of being overrated shows a great deal of ignorance. Certainly the outstanding critical reviews for films like Burn After Reading, Michael Clayton, Syriana, Good Night and Good Luck, O Brother Where Art Thou, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and Out of Sight would say otherwise.

And then there's the awards and nominations...

  • Michael Clayton: Best Actor Oscar & Golden Globe noms
  • Good Night and Good Luck: Best Director and Best Screenplay Oscar & Golden Globe noms
  • Syriana: won Best Supporting Actor at both the Oscars and Golden Globes
  • O Brother Where Art Thou: won Best Actor at the Golden Globes
  • Nominated for three Golden Globes, two Emmys, and two SAG Awards for ER. Shared the SAG Award for Best Ensemble three times with the rest of the ER cast.
The fact that GWR holds up Adrian Paul (:guffaw:) as someone who should be getting the roles Clooney is somehow unjustly taking from the rest of the Hollywood community just proves how poorly thought out his argument is.

I'm not a big Clooney fan but think he's a good actor. He's also learned from his mistakes. After his big budget stinkers, he's taken a different approach to the roles he goes for, and is often the power behind getting the movies made. He still makes his stinker here and there (no one's got a perfect resume), but at least he's making the movies he wants to make.

And let's be honest here, for every good or great actor we see on the screen, there are people with a lot more talent that would've been better at the role who never got a break and thus we'll never see them.

I personally do not let the fact that the rest of Hollywood loves to kiss his ass inspire me to do so.

I'm not sure violence or language kept people away from "Leatherheads." the Dark Knight was pretty violent and everyone seemed to be OK with it.

Clooney's just not a movie star. Director? I'm not sure.

Haha. You so funny. Clooney's not a movie star? Clearly he is.

What's this world where people aren't watching his movies? Other than Leatherheads, his movies have made a rather decent amount back for the studios if not a great in some cases. Good Night & Good Luck did $54 mill off a $7 mill budget. Syriana doubled its budget. Ocean's 11, 12, 13? C'mon.

You can put me very much in the pro-Clooney camp. I hadn't actually heard of Burn After Reading prior to this thread but I IMDB'ed it - Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Brad Pitt, Tilda Swinton, JK Simmons ? Bloody hell that's a cast and a half.

Sold, I don't even care what it's about! :techman:

yeah clooney can get people to go and see films like syriana and good night when they wouldnt if some other actor was in it.
they might not make blockbuster numbers but they do make more then what they cost by far.
some thing i posted about when this all came up earlier.

if he was in a blockbuster style movie it could very well do great numbers .
but for now clooney is able to do the kinds of movies he wants to without worrying about that to make his rep.

as for leatherheads it may be that clooney was attracted by the subject though it had more problems script wise then most of his films.

I love George Clooney and consider him a top rate actor.
His movies and subjects don't appeal to everyone, but that's true of anything.
He is quite talented and capable, and I usually enjoy his work.

I think Clooney's a great actor. He may not be the best actor out there but he's incredibly charming and has tremendous screen presence. I think what also benefits his performance is that he seems to be really serious about his acting, very professional and passionate at the same time.

It's also great to see that he'll make pure fun and entertainment movies such as Ocean's Eleven as well as pretty cerebral science fiction like Solaris or heavy political fare, e.g. Syriania.

The guy from Highlander: The Series. GWR seems to think there's some sort of grave galactic injustice involving this guy's career and the fact that he keeps landing roles in shitty movies.

Oh dear Lord, save yourself some money and rent this one. My girlfriend and I saw this recently and this was by far the worst movie we've seen in a long time.

Trust me, don't let that fool you. Great cast, HORRIBLE movie.

I don't normally say too much about movies, I figure to each his own, and who am I to tell somebody what they may or may not like. But that one was such a stinker I can't restrain myself.

Do I really need to go and do a box office analysis for GC's movies again to prove every single one has been profitable to its respective studio? Please, someone go grab the info I posted in the OTHER thread and repost it here. I'm much too tired to do it.

I've always enjoyed Clooney's work. He's a good actor, and can do both serious movies and funny movies. I personally enjoyed Burn After Reading a lot, but I can see how it's not everybody's cup of tea. It's a very dry, very ironic form of funny rather than haha-funny.

I think doing that would be redundant at this point. Everyone knows Clooney is one of Hollywood's most bankable stars and yet he pretty much manages to stay that way without doing Generic Action Movie #47 every summer.
