So what are you reading now (Part 4)?

Finished Typhon Pact: Zero Sum Game by David Mack and The Game: Penetrating the Secret World of Pick-Up Artists by Neil Strauss. (Weird book, that one.) Moving back to finish Obama's Wars by Bob Woodward, and then on to finish A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn.

I finished the Commonwealth duology, Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained, by Peter F. Hamilton a few days ago, much earlier than I had expected, considering both books add up to well over 2000 pages. But it was such an exiting read I really ploughed through it.
It's hard to sum something so large up in a few words. There were things I didn't like and things I loved. Hamilton paints a very detailed picture of this future universe and populates it with a lot of interesting characters. The future is very weird in some places and very much like our own time in others. I really liked how today's web communication evolved to those e-butler implants people were using in the books.
I really appreciated how everything came together in the end and how the stuff in the first book that sometimes seemed to be unconnected or unimportant turned out to be important to the overall plot. It reminds me of the film La Dolce Vita by Fellini in a way, where every scene turn out to have meaning, even though it doesn't seem like it at first glance. I hear there's an even bigger trilogy set in the same universe 1200 years later. I'm definetely going to check that out someday.

After that I read the new Trek novel Zero Sum Game. It was good, though not great. I loved the insight we get into Breen society and the concept of a masked society. It also explains the divergent factoids about the Breen in canon nicely. The secret ops plot stretched plausibility a few times, in my opinion, but it was an exciting read. The last scene is just awesome.

I'm out of new books to read, more or less. I do have books I haven't read, yet, but I don't feel like reading them. I read something about Der Tod in Venedig (Death in Venice) by Thomas Mann and felt the urge to reread it so I might just do that. After that, who knows? Maybe I'll finally tackle the few stories by him I haven't yet read. It'll be a bit sad, though. He's my favourite author and there's something sad about having read everything with no hope of any new output. There's still Joseph und Seine Brüder (Joseph and his Brothers), which I'm saving for a prolonged stay on a deserted island. ;)

^ The way every main character was actually important in some way to the way the climax of Judas played out blew me away. That was a huge cast, for everyone to really actually be necessary. No spare parts.

And yes, the later trilogy is highly worth the read. Though actually, by page count, the trilogy is about as long as Pandora/Judas, just split 3 ways instead of 2.

Last week I read Unspoken Truth and Night of the Wolves. UT was great. It would've held my attention even if it weren't Trek; it's not just good Trek, but good literature.

Now I'm reading Open Secrets. I keep ending up gazing at the cover art for a while. Yay Drexler!

There was even time for interesting character developments for most of them. I thought it was a bit sad, though, that Paula Myo wasn't able to overcome her genetic programming and that Adam Elvin didn't get a happy end of sorts. Somehow, I really liked him.

Ah, good to know. It'll make the books a little easier to handle and to read on the train and the like.

currently reading Star Wars the Thrawn Trilogy. I can never get enough of that series of books.
Great books, reading them was what really got me into the Star Wars EU. I read a few of the NJO first, but decided to go back to the beginning.

I also decided to star Mort by Terry Pratchett. I realized that I didn't really want to start another series (this will be my fourth Discworld book, but it is my first Death book so it really doesn't really fit that criteria, but it is closer than Casino Royale or Eragon), and I was also in the mood for something fun. It was also either a Christmas or birthday present from my sister and I feel guilty I haven't read it yet.

You'll catch up with Paula in the next trilogy (and a bunch of the other characters as well). I think the developments in their characters might surprise you. (The trilogy starts with almost all new characters, but familiar faces slowly show up as it progresses.)

Sins of Commission is proving to be less than awesome, and the Sli don't sound like the Sphinx-esque Tholians I remember. I'm sticking with it, though. I had a fanboy moment at the mention of the USS Crockett NCC-600, a Scout-class ship from FJ's old manual, lost 30 years prior:D.

I have a pile of Jacobean tragedies to read through. *Sigh*, duty calls. I can't wait to finish the literature course, so I can (ironically) read for my own interest or pleasure again. I have a huge pile of books I want to savour, but I can't at present. Zero Sum Game was an exception - I never miss the latest Trek novel. I'm that obsessive. ;)

Nothin' stops me from my reading. (which is good because I work in a library:lol:). Often I'm reading several books concurrently, to wit, KRAD's excellent the Brave and the bold duology, Catalyst of Sorrows the Lost Era novel and rereading Beneath the Raptors wing.

And that's just the trek lit.

I envy you :techman:

I have two weekly essays plus my dissertation to work on, so that doesn't help.

I was sick last read and didn't read a thing, so I'm still working on Simon Schama's History of Britain: At the Edge of the World and Augustine of Hippo's Confessions. I want to resume the Enterprise relaunch, but am waiting on a book..

When, many years ago, it became clear that there would be no more than three Farscape novels, I decided to save one for a rainy day. Well, it's rainy, there are new Farscape adventures in comic book form, and I've been watching Farscape DVDs... so at last I am reading House of Cards by the Mighty KRAD. And enjoying it.

I don't know if this is worth it's own thread, so I'm just gonna ask it here since it relates to one of the books I'm reading.
In the Slow Knife, Kein talks to a server on Tantok Nor several times. So I was wondering, is he supposed to be Garak? Because I got a real big Garak vibe of off him.

I think it is meant to be. That's how I took it.
