So what are you reading now (Part 4)?

I started reading a novel called Spook Country by William Gibson. It's supposed to be a spy scifi novel.

I'm not sure I'd call it sci-fi as it's set more or less in the present day and doesn't feature any futuristic technology, as far as I can remember. William Gibson moved on into the present day a couple of years ago. On the one hand, I'm sad about that because I would love to read a new, good cyberpunk novel again. On the other hand, I've enjoyed his recent books Pattern Recognition and Spook Country a lot. The next one, Zero History, will be out soon and I'm looking forward to it.

"After America" by John Birmingham; second in his newest trilogy.

Have to say, it's not "wow"-ing me like "Without Warning" did and doesn't have the epic scope that the Axis of Time trilogy had.

Anyone else read it? Does it get better?

Finished reading 'Snow Crash'....

It's a lot to take in; and, I realize there are some who really dig these particular types of novels...(I will actually be reading 'Burning Chrome' soon...particularly for the Johnny Mnemonic short story).

Of course, I found it interesting the main character--Hiro Protagonist--is black/Japanese, as many of my stories and interests as many here on Trektoday know are of black/Asian relations. Aside from that, it's also interesting how the author has a 15-year-old girl in a brief relationship with a much older man...who happens to be one of the main villains of the books.

In reading certain books, I always ask how it could be adapted for the big screen; this particular book will be a lot of work for whomever takes it on...especially since films have already touched the subject of virtual reality/action...ie.. 'The Matrix' films, 'Inception,' and even 'Dark City'...

I'm going to check reviews on Amazon.com...

(I personally give it about a 3 or 3.25 out of 5)...

Next up: A short story I will finish from the book called, 'The Hard Stuff.' (Yes, it's that kind of book...:devil:)

HAPPY HOUR OF THE DAMNED by Mark Henry. How could I resist a novel about a sexy zombie chick in hip, modern-day Seattle?

The thing about Gibson's more recent books is that they're like a lot of JG Ballard's books: even when they aren't science fiction, something about them feels like science fiction. Like Ballard, Gibson just seems to see the world in a different way.

FYI: There's a nice interview with Gibson in the new issue of TIME magazine.

I recently started getting caught up on the DS9 Relaunch, and am currently on Mission Gamma: This Gray Spirit. The first time I started the series, I stopped after this one, so here's hoping I fare better this time around. I think I should be able to, particularly since this time I actually possess books that come after it, whereas I had simply "stopped" for no real reason the first time around.

Decided to move on from Trek fiction to dedicate more time to other Science Fiction (think I've finally burned out on Trek after 33 years ).

Picked up the first Honor Harrington novel, On Basilik Station, and am finding it a very enjoyable read. Wish the Star Trek 2009 writers had read this book and learned how to introduce a main character in an interesting and realistic (in universe) way.

I read Terminator 2: Hour of the Wolf and On Basilisk Station.

Ditto

The Honor Harrington universe is my first opportunity to give the kindle a try. I finished On Basilisk Station and am currently reading The Honor of the Queen.

I forgot to mention the other day that I finished "Foundlings" by Jeffrey Lang from Prophecy and Change. This was a really good Odo story, and it also gave us a chance to see another one off character again, this time Thrax. Has there been any mention of what's become of Thrax since the Dominion War ended?
My rating: 8/10

Greg thanks for the info about the Gibson interview I'll have to see if I can find a copy of Time and read his interview.

Re-reading Destiny, though I may stop mid-read to pick up the High King of Montival by S.M. Stirling when I get my copy this week.

I finished "Iron", the second story in The Man-Kzin Wars. It was very slow going, and descended into scientific lecture too often. I also saw the ending a mile off.

I'm continuing DS9 Inferno, but things have slowed right down with all sorts of ultra-convienent, contrived, implausible technobabble. And Ghost Odo. Seriously?

I read Terminator 2: Hour of the Wolf...

Is that any good? Saw it in a used bookstore in town and was thinking about acquiring it next time in. But I won't bother if it sucks.

Hour of the Wolf is apparently a sequel to The New John Connors Chronicles trilogy (which I've never read). It's enjoyable but nothing special. It's also a bit too open-ended for my tastes. I assume they were hoping to continue the story at some point.

The only really interesting thing about the story is its take on time travel, but I can't be sure if it's just a redux of what was covered in the trilogy I never read.
