[Use of Time]

I'm working on the last of the Double Helix novels. I will be happy to finish this series. The first two novels weren't that bad but the story quickly lost it's way with the Carey and David offerings. I'm at the point where I just don't care about the virus anymore.

I was finally able to finish the Bloodwing saga from Diane Duane. The Empty Chair was good in sections but you need to be prepared for overly wordy segments of battle planning and reflections on the loneliness of command by both Kirk and Ael. I'm not sure this one really needed 420 pages to tell the story it did.

Finished out Typhon Pact: Struggle Within pretty quickly. The Talarian stuff was interesting, but felt too constrained by the short space. I couldn't really engage with the Kinshaya stuff, too many characters in too short a time. Really, this should have been a full novel so that these stories could breathe a bit. It's a shame they didn't stick with the original idea of doing one focus novel on each of the Typhon Pact members.

Anyway, I think I'm going to take a brief respite from Trek Lit and plunge into Galveston by Nick Pizzolatto and probably also The King in Yellow by R.W. Chambers.

 

[Endgame]

It took a while (and a major accomplishment for my slow reading abilities) but I finished "Great Expectations" by Dickens; then, I also completed "The Long Night" by Dean Wesley Smith & Kristine Kathryn Rusch (1990, ST-DS9 #14). It was hard finding the book for my e-reader among the porn. Well not that hard. Star Trek does kind of stand out. Still, getting the omnibus SCE books is sometimes time consuming. Maybe I shall start the SCE series soon. Or more modern books. Hmm...

I was looking at the lists of Star Trek novels ... wish lists, and, I happened to see in "Objective: Bajor" by John Peel (1996) which I might start reading, that, in the list, there is the item "Demora" for ST-TOS #76 and it looked odd, so, I went to my copy of "Gateways: Doors into Chaos" by Robert Greenberger (2001) and looked at the list for ST-TOS and find that it has "The Captain's Daughter" for ST-TOS #76. Are there different books with the variant titles?

I also noticed that my KOBO e-book for "The Long Night" gives the copyright as 1990. This must be a mistake as books around that time are dated 1994 to 1997 or thereabouts. How can this be, I wonder?

I finished yesterday Indistiguishable from Magic, swallowing the last 200 pages within a day!

I hoped to start Absent Enemies today, but £3.99 here vs. US$1.99 on the other side of the pond (where I can't buy) changed my plans to Cold Equations: Book 1.

It's the same book. Demora was Peter David's original title for the book, and I believe it was initially solicited with that title. It was changed late in the game to The Captain's Daughter.

Thanks. That may very well be my next purchase. Currently reading "Walden Two" by B. F. Skinner (with preface from 1976). Interested in the rosy future sites and the thorny future websites. "Daybreak Magazine" (rosy not like the novel with same title) and "Dark Mountain" (thorny but perhaps still part of the rose). Of course, I discovered "Endgame (Volumes I and II)" by Jensen after taking my name for this site and read "Agenda 21" materials long ago. Who would have ever thought that research into the future would be so uncertain? I wonder what Lucksly and Dulmur would say. Perhaps uncertainty increases just like entropy. Do the two covary maybe inversely? More entropy, less uncertainty? Maybe not.

Third Book of the Vanguard Series is now done and dusted and I think Reap the Whirlwind is my favourite book of the series by far.

After doing "Little Green Men" for the DS9 Rewatch on Tor.com, I decided to indulge myself and pick up From History's Shadow on the Nook (I had a B&N gift card burning a hole in my wallet). A very enjoyable book, a worthy companion to Greg Cox's Eugenics Wars books, and I love how Dayton incorporated his classic Strange New Worlds III story "The Aliens are Coming!" into it.

screw the shark

The correct phrase is jump the shark. It came from the Happy Day episode where Fonzie jumped the shark.

I know. But with LKH's books it became 'screw the shark' as the series derailed the moment the main character, Anita, began literally screwing everyone around her. It's kind of an in-joke with the Antis.

I have to agree. I loved the earlier books, but I gave up the series when she spent more time screwing the monsters than fighting them.

Edited to add: Sorry for the ancient reply, I just wandered into this thread and the fate of the Anita Blake books really bothers me.

Spider-Man set in early 20th century.

Finally started to read Greg Cox's The Bestseller Job this week. Bought it on release day, but hadn't come around to read it until now.
