So What Are you Reading?: Generations

THE DEEP BLUE GOODBYE by John D MacDonald

The first of the Travis McGee books. A bit of a curate's egg. A straightforward plot and thorough loathesome villain, and a good thrilling finale. Some of McGee's situation and thoughts as he tries to help a couple of victims of that villain remind me of situations familiar to me. Writer and character are actually trying to be more progressive in the dealings with vulnerable women, and – at first – in the descriptions, which is good... except that because it was written in 1964 it has an air of being, as Arthur Dent might say, almost but not quite entirely unlike being sensible as I'd see it, and so, when it slips, the dissonance seems more creepy than if it was just written as regular 1960s blokiness... But kudos for trying.

A time to series

A time to heal (I like David Mack's portrayal of crooked leaders in the Federation)

I can hardly remember all the details of the A time to series, but Crusher's portrayal in one of the novels was definitely off. The last two novels were the best by far.
She comes across as a whiny high school girl 'Why doesn't Picard notice me'? Get a grip, you're a grown woman!

TOS: Serpents in the Garden. I wasn't sure how I felt about it at first with a pre-TMP Admiral Kirk just running off blind into some dangerous mission with 3 people, but the overall story was pretty decent once things got rolling.

Now on to more 2273 fiction with TMP and beyond.

Since my last post, I finished Back to the Future, Volume 2.
I then read Star Trek: The Original Series: Time for Yesterday by A.C. Crispin.
Then I read "Brief Candle" by Christopher L. Bennett, from Star Trek: Voyager: Distant Shores.
I'm now reading "The Landing Party" by Robert Greenberger, from Star Trek: The Original Series: Constellations.

Finished A Time To Be Born and enjoyed it a lot more the second time around.
About to start the second Lost Era's book Serpents Among the Ruins. I hope I enjoy it as much as I did the first novel in the series, The Sundered

Still need to read that one.

Yeah, I don't think I've read the series in chronological (as far as the series is concerned) order, but probably close to publication order instead. I didn't actually know about the One Thousand Monsters one until I saw it in the shops a few weeks ago. I think the first novel of his I read (under the pen name Jack Yeovil) was Drachenfel and then Genevieve Undead before I found Anno Dracula.

I finished up The Midnight Front by David Mack yesterday and started the digital collection of the Dresden Files: War Cry comic book miniseries.

I've started on Blood Price by Tanya Huff. I'd seen the show and read her Confederation books, but not got round to trying this series.

I can't remember if I said I read The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch or not, but it was great. Neil Blonkamp has already optioned it for a movie. I think it would make a great one... or even a TV show.

Reading Ararat by Christopher Golden right now. Nothing more than an airport novel diversion, but I'm already halfway through so I'm going to finish it.
