so the producers and writers said that discovery will lead into TOS (60's aesthetics and all)...

I haven't actually read it yet myself, but didn't David Mack's novel Desperate Hours address the differences in uniforms seen on Discovery and in the original series? Novels aren't canon of course, but Mack worked closely with the Discovery writers room while working on this novel. If memory serves, some of the incidental details that he created for the novel were passed on to the actors as background for their characters.
The novel indicates the Discovery uniforms are "utility jumpsuits" while Pike's crew's uniforms are "a new uniform style that so far had been issued exclusively to the crews of Starfleet's vaunted Constitution-class starships." I'm not sure I buy it; sure are a lot of admirals hanging out in "utility jumpsuits"!

The details he came up with weren't just background, though: Mack named Kayla Detmer for the book, which made its way on screen.

Why not? There are Army generals who were the camo "working" uniform, depending on regulations of the day.

Why not be comfortable?

We know they've made the Cage/WNMHGB uniforms (more or less), so that can be an easy change to end the season on. Changes to the displays/sound fx can be chalked up to a computer upgrade in between seasons. A splash of new paint here and there in the ship's interior (less blues, more reds, and start primary-coloring the hell out of the machinery), start swapping the chairs in the mess hall with Burke chairs, replace the JJ-style metal hatches with classic 'swish' doors, and you're most of the way there aesthetics-wise while still keeping all the HD detail.

Thank Gawd someone finally brought up the fact that the production design doesn't match that of TOS. I thought we'd go the entire run of the series without anyone noticing or commenting on that!

BTW- has anyone noticed that the Klingons don't look right??? What the hell is up with that?

The thing is, there are stylistic hint of TOS on Discovery. Stuff that could easily be exploited to become full on TOS styling with a few panel changes and some more color to the sets.

Aside from the Klingons that is...the Klingons are totally all over the place verses anything that has been seen before.

If the shows staff hadn't brought it up like that, the horse wouldn't be getting beaten. But they did bring it up, and they have spent some effort to make some things fit nearly perfectly, or within an easy potential to be TOS correct, but other things are totally left field (the Klingons). Their Starfleet and Vulcan stylings are basically correct.

The Klingons are Klingons. They're bumpy-foreheaded beings that wear spiky armour. Except for 1966-1969, they've looked like that (because budget). Gene Roddenberry said they've always looked like that. I don't see the discontinuity.

The Klingons are also an example of a dead horse. I never would have guessed that people are unhappy with them. It's not like people haven't been complaining about them for the last 10 weeks. To quote Captain Kirk from Star Trek XII: So Very Tired, 'Again with the Klingons....'

I was thinking that it would be cool if, sometime during STD, they show a Constitution-class ship and it looked exactly the way it did in TOS, and there would be some throwaway line from one of the Discovery crew saying that Starfleet decided to go for a different look for the Constitution-class.

For me, that'd be perfect.
If they're going to use an old design at all, I would prefer the TMP design. For me, that's what the Enterprise ALWAYS looked like, and the only thing the refit changed was its engine core. I just figure the TOS version of the ship was what the TMP version would have looked like on an ultra low budget and that if they had it all to do again (which was the intent in "Phase II") it would have looked like TMP/Wrath of Khan all along.

I just really hope we don't get a reset button, or have it shoehorned in with some ridiculously convoluted explanation. Just let the show stand on its own (abundant) merits rather than pandering to people who will never accept it anyway.

Even if they have the show end with them walking onto James Cawley's TOS bridge set and Burnham snogging a CG 1960's William Shatner, it won't make everything we've seen in the show up until now fit any better.

I'm watching and enjoying it as a Smallville/Gotham-style reimagined reboot-prequel. Because that's the only way any of it makes any sense whatsoever. Visually, technologically and thematically.

I don't think anyone will like this post, and I hope I'm wrong about my conclusions.

I expect no resolution of how the Klingons look, the change of ships, why the Spore Drive isn't in use, why Spock never mentions Burnham.

Producers, show writers and showrunners telling us that everything will make sense and to just hold in has been a trope of TV production from the X-Files, modern BattleStar Galactica, Lost, FlashForward and many more.

In other words, none of what has been suggested will be resolved, will likely be resolved. No answers will be given this season. In reality, I suspect that whilst their knowledge of the franchise is far better than anyone gives them credit for, I think they have made this up as they go along with no end in sight.

One very clear indication of this is how the incredibly talented makeup, prosthetic guys repeatedly insist on throwing Fuller under a bus each time the Klingons are brought up. I think the two guys featured on After Trek are incredibly talented, but in almost every interview, the Klingon design gets laid at Fuller's door,

Fuller has become the fall guy for the Klingon design, and the only reason I can see you would do that is that you've been told to say that. Otherwise, it's incredibly bad form for what are very nice designs, if a little hard to get used to initially.

I suspect the Klingon issue is like the TOS aesthetic issue. It could all be resolved by calling this a reboot. They chose not to do this, but I don't think they've planned this out either. I'd be happier just saying that they revisualised things but now that overarching story points such as cloaking are not fitting, I'm no longer sure.

Mark my words - they will tell you that everything will be revealed and resolved next season.
