So not Romulans, not Klingons, not the Borg...

All enemies we've seen before, countless times, how about this for the villains in the next movie?

The Gorn!

Trekker, watching "Arena."

I think it would be interesting to see villains approached from a completely different angle. Maybe a threat from within the Federation. They should make the new villain (or villains) a lot more sympathetic and less of a moustache-twirling/revenge seeking maniac (we can leave that to Star Wars). Maybe some threat that arises as a direct result of the destruction of Vulcan. Perhaps something similar to the Maquis-heroes to some criminals to others.

How about Cardassians?

It is *possible* that first contact has already been made, as Uhura orders Cardassian drinks at the bar, but not necessarily. Maybe the UFP's first contact with Cardassia led to instant trouble?

True, Cardassians were the major villain on DS9, but I always thought it'd be cool to see how Kirk and company dealt with them.

Plus, I just love to say the name 'Cardassian.' It's the coolest alien race name I've heard. I could say it over and over: Cardassian Cardassian Cardassian. :D

I thin k this would be a pretty cool idea. We rarely see "the threat from the inside" in star trek. It would be cool seeing it on the big screen.

Captain Garth of Izar, he could be the reason the bulk of the Fleet was in the Laurentian system

I agree, a faction of people that want a more militaristic federation would be a perfect villain.

I like the Gorn idea. Their arc couuld see them going from mindless alien reptile killing machines slaughtering humanity (imagine an army of angry Gorn!) to a personal confrontation between the Enterprise crew and a specific Gorn villian/mastermind. A sort of "recognize your enemy's humanity" story.

The Tholian culture is also ripe for exploration.

I like the Gorn idea....esp. if they're done as intelligent, super-raptor-type villans.....maybe a Gorn vs. Klingon battle.... :techman:

OK so the writers are going over NOVELS for inspiration.....what are we going to wind up with..a story that's not too derivative and yet is familiar. It has to be a story focused not on introduction but a self-contained story.

Ok THIS is derivative, but why not DOOMSDAY MACHINE?? Tholians? Kzin? City on the Edge of Forever (haha). They can tell anything now.

RAMA

Doomsday Machine would rock....but I'm not sure about another planet destroying weapon for the first sequel. Maybe the third movie.

We saw how Kirk and Co dealt with them when the were called Klingons. The Cardassians always struck me as the way the original 60's era Klingons would've been done if they'd stayed true to their original presentation. The Romulans were originally honorable but became uber sneaky, while the Klingon's became honorable.

But the Cardassians were pretty much the classic Klingons with a different look to me.

I must point out that the greatest threat in Star Wars came from within with the doddering senator Palpatine actually a Sith lord destined to be Emperor.

Maybe some threat that arises as a direct result of the destruction of Vulcan. Perhaps something similar to the Maquis-heroes to some criminals to others.

That would be excellent. Politics is always more interesting than balding baddies with big spears.
