So Much For IDIC!

Anyone out there ever feel they are victimised by others because they have objections to the likes of NuTrek or STD (or any of the other series), because they're obviously not "proper" fans because they don't love everything that's being churned out?

Not really. I can see why people might get upset if someone makes their dislike personal but in the end it's just words on a computer screen.

I think it's only somewhat natural for us to get somewhat defensive when someone starts to critise something we love. Do I like everything they've churned out of course not some episodes/films are better than others.

No. But the need to say one series is better than another due to differing tastes can get pretty toxic at times. (Or tediously boring like the quoted post demonstrates)

What is a "proper" fan anyway?

What if everyone decides that for themselves.
No need for anyone to tell me what to like and what to hate.

Victimized? No.

I really don't care what other people think of my Star Trek preferences. And it's a stupid thing about which to argue anyway.

That's not helpful.

I have half a mind to put this thread out of its misery right now...

People occasionally being jerks doesn't make me feel 'victimized'.

If somebody physically attacked me for that reason, sure I'd feel victimized, but just yelling at me on the internet? I'm a grownup.

There really is only a handfull of fans who are not liking because of actual reasons. Like, not liking the acting, or writing. Things that you actually judge a show on.

The others are just spoiled fanboys who only look at what the Klingons look like, or that the shipdesign doesn't fit in the era, or how the show should look EXACTLY like 'The Cage'. You can have issues with it, but if you judge a show on it, you're only into Star Trek for the looks, not the actual show, the actual writing and acting and directing. You know, things that actualy make an episode.

So yeah, if you can't be unbiased about it, I don't really care about what you think. Call me harsh or a dickhead, can't be bothered. To those who've seen 3 episodes now, and simply aren't liking the show for what it is, that's cool. Heck, I'm still not sure yet. But that's simply because I'm not used to this show yet. I needed time to get into DS9 as well. Now, I consider it the best Star Trek ever. You can't actually judge a whole show on 3 episodes.

I've been getting shit since I arrived here for defending and enjoying Enterprise, then the new movies, and initial defense of Discovery trying something new. To the point of taking breaks from the board over being looked down on for liking them at all, insinuations on my character, intelligence or principles for enjoying them.

So people are assholes generally.

Hell, you get shit from Trekkies if you don't like TOS. Not a big of that show really. Fandoms are filled with butthurt people.

I do like TOS and have always had a copy of it. As much as I like to rewatch it occasionally and do like artistic efforts like Star Trek Continues, I am not an apologist for anything contained in it. And I support reboot and re-imaging efforts like the new movies, what Discovery may do etc as well as fan ones.

That has not gone down well here, ever, with low level abuse because of it.

The OP actually surprises me by saying he thinks people who hate the show are being the victims here, because I'm getting the idea that people who actually like the show or are optimistic are being talked down on by fans because they think a show that doesn't look EXACTLY like 'The Cage' did are not true fans.

Which basicly proves it's all about point of view.

The issue is caring about whether or not someone thinks you're a "true fan". Love Star Trek for your own reasons, and don't concern yourself with angry words on a computer.

That's what you think, what I think. What a lot of fans think. And then there are those that think you're a heathen when you're ok with the Klingons from Discovery

I think there's a lot of polarization that happens in fandoms like Trek.

I myself am pretty moderate. There's very little I hate and there's very little I unconditionally love.

I do find that the people who are on the "dislike" side are usually the more hostile and unreasonable, though, in fairness. Usually they are motivated strongly enough to see the object of their dislike fail that they'll resort to some extreme measures.

My biggest problem in the battle between "active dislike" vs "active like" is that the dislike activities are not victimless, so to speak. The dislikers are generally doing their thing to try and sink the popularity of a show or movie. They could just ignore and move on, but they take the fight to a whole different level and wish for the show or movie to outright fail. Completely selfish and unfair to those who are enjoying whatever show or movie is being debated.

The active "likers" hurt nothing. The active "dislikers" actually can cause damage.

That's my beef.

Definitely. It's kinda amusing that some of the most persistent, derogatory comments directed toward me back in 2009 and when the second nuTrek movie came out were by people who are now in agreement with me about Discovery - that's it's not good. Some of the attacks were really personal, and some I would classify as hateful.

I have no patience with this "You don't like the same thing I like, so I'm going to insult you for the next ten years" attitude. These are movies and TV shows. We all have our preferences, and it's not a moral failing to dislike something.

As opposed to those who are accused of not being true fans for liking the Kelvinverse or Discovery? I've seen plenty of that.

It's been going on for years with each new series.
I've said many negative things about Enterprise (boring), nuTrek (ridiculous and dumbed-down), and Discovery (I have to wonder why they bothered if they're not going to even pretend to adhere to anything in TOS-canon).

But I have never, even once, suggested that people who like this stuff are not true Star Trek fans.

After all, Voyager is my second-favorite series.
