So, it's Captain Robau...

Re: So, it's Captain Rabau...

Huh?

Did you have the same prediction for the USS Reliant, Terrell, Kyle, Beach and Chekov when we first started to hear about character names in ST II?

...Or USS Excelsior and Styles in ST III?....
There were quite a few people who thought that the adventures of Captain Sulu of the Excelsior would have made a good series, and that series should have been made instead of the series Enterprise. There was quite a campaign by fan groups who wanted Paramount to do this.

I personally didn't mind Enterprise, and I wonder if Takei has the gravitas to be a TV lead. There would have definitely needed to be a younger and more charasmatic character on a potential "Excelsior" series who would be "the lead".

I'm still of the opinion that this character, and his crew, are being prepped for a possible "spin-off" TV series if this movie is successful.

Or USS Saratoga and Alexander in ST IV?
Is it really necessary to take that sort of tone in responding? Really?

Cary, don't be so quick to go on the defensive, please. I think he does have a valid question.

Actually, "Sulu" is not a Japanese name, and Sulu himself (in ST IV) hails from San Francisco, USA.

The Asian guy's from San Francisco? Even better. That's right up there with the redneck named "McCoy" being from the deep south and the token alien having green blood and pointed ears.

Hey, I was just curious. So drop the smug.

Hey, it was an observation, not a personal attack. So drop the phaser.

Again, please discuss without being defensive.

So if the Pakistani guy's name is Spanish or Irish or German, that's fine with me.

How is a Pakistani man having a Pakistani name a stereotype?
It isn't.

...I just don't get why the bridge crew was applauded for its diversity but never criticized for being laden with cheap stereotypes. Not only that but it seems certain fans (not pointing any fingers) have come to expect it to continue, even though this franchise is supposed to take place in a future where cultural and ethnic barriers no longer exist.

A charcater embracing the fact that he is Pakastani or an Asian from San Francisco is not creating "cultural and ethnic barriers". There is nothing wrong with cultural diversity. I think embracing a person's cultural identiny is preferred over ignoring that person's ethnicity.

I'm a first generation Greek-American...If I were so lucky as to be in Star Trek, I would want my character to be someone who is culturally Greek. I would want to be "Lieutenant Papadopoulos", not "Lieutenant Jones" who just happens to have black hair and olive skin.

I'm curious to know exactly how "Rabau" is pronounced. Does anyone know?

Maybe Lt Jones is Welsh.;)

Seriously though. How often does the actor get to make these decisions?

Hardly ever, but I wouldn't consider it (necessarily) ethnic stereotyping if a producer wanted me to play Greek Lt. Papadopoulos -- as long as it was done in the right manner, and Star Trek has been pretty good about doing it right in the past.

I thought it's "Robau". And I guess it is pronounced ROH-BA-UH.

Thanks! Oh and it would be nice if the original poster would edit the post and spell the name correctly because that's what confused me with the incorrect Rabau spelling.

Re: So, it's Captain Rabau...

Since the movie and TV rights are still split, I also doubt Cary's theory very much. As I've said elsewhere, I believe Star Trek is strictly a film series for the forseeable future, just as it was from 1979 to 1986. I think we're getting into a steam over what is in all likelihood an incidental supporting character in the movie, since I haven't heard anything that places any significance on the role (and the film already posesses its fare share of prominent figures).

I'd pronounce Robau as Roe-bow, but that's just a guess...

Re: So, it's Captain Rabau...

He'll be captain of the Enterprise. No, not that one. The battle kick-ass version. The one where... nevermind. It'll make sense one day. ;)

First off... I said "I'm of the opinion." I base that upon some things that are in public, and some things that aren't, about the sort of character we're seeing.

My only "tone" was brevity and being informative. It was typed quite jovially, and no malice was intended.

Did I accuse you of not having the right to express an opinion? :wtf:

I am Scotch, Irish, English, German Jew, Pennsylvania Dutch and 1/4 Cherokee and gay and damn JJ Abrams all to hell if he doesn't have someone of my heritage with the proper sounding name. He must be treated with all the respect due of such a heritage or I'm boycotting the movie!
JJ Abrams, "The part of Security Ensign Mutt will be played by Sector 7 in Star Trek XI."
Captain Robau hits intercom button, "Ensign Mutt report to transporter room 2. Uniform of the day is red shirt."
Ensign Mutt, "Crap!"
