So, it's Captain Robau...

Cary L. Brown

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
... that's the name of the heretofore-unnamed Starfleet captain played by the guy referred to, somewhat perjoratively, in here as "Captain Pakistan."

TrekMovie has an article quoted in which he comments on his role, and in particular his ship (which is either "the alternative Battleship Enterprise" or is the ship that Lieutenant Kirk takes his Command Course cruise on... it's not the Enterprise, as we know it, at least!)

I'm still of the opinion that this character, and his crew, are being prepped for a possible "spin-off" TV series if this movie is successful.

Thoughts? Comments?

This could indeed be the case. Actually I like the idea. Would be a nice and intelligent way to introduce characters for a new series.

This sounds pretty lame. I hope the news gets better than this.
What's so lame about this news?

It's hard to say without knowing anything about the character, other than his ethnic background, or ship and crew. Why do you think they might try to spin off a tv show based on this character? I don't believe we'll see any tv show until after the second of these new movies, and that's if the first one is a success. If this movie fails Trek fans are going to be without any new Trek on film for quite some time.

Re: So, it's Captain Rabau...

Interesting, I hope its a seperate not the Enterprise (in any form) I remember reading when he was first cast he was supposed to be commanding an older ship (and I immediatly thought Farragut or Republic being 2 of Kirks early assignments) so Im hoping its that so we get to hopefully see more than one type of ship in this movie even if both of these have been thought of as Constitution class.

Since people made a fuss about the ethnicity of the character, I am curious about the etymology and distribution of the surname. I quick google search seems to point to some German people, but maybe the origin is Pakistani.

Re: So, it's Captain Rabau...

can't be the Farragut. Garrovick commanded the Farragut
Well that thought was a couple months back when it was first announced and we didnt know his name, my theory was that the could have been Garrovick.

EDIT: going betweeen the articles on TrekToday and TrekMovie It sounds like it will deffinatly be a new ship
He commands a ship, which has not been seen in the saga before - TrekToday.Com
which I read as not being the "Battleship Enterprise" like a few others have been theorising

Captain Robau.

The movie is essentially a front to create a new TV series? That's a tall order. I thought the purpose of this movie was to reinvigorate interest in the old (TOS) characters again. See them in a new light. Fresh air.

I doubt Abrams pitch to Paramount for this movie included the idea of using this movie to groom new characters to be part of a TV series.

For what it's worth, just to speculate, my guess is Fahir's Captain Robau and his ship and crew don't even make it to the end of the movie.

Huh?

Did you have the same prediction for the USS Reliant, Terrell, Kyle, Beach and Chekov when we first started to hear about character names in ST II?

Or USS Excelsior and Styles in ST III? Or USS Grissom and Esteban, Saavik and Marcus?

Or USS Saratoga and Alexander in ST IV?

Yes, because if this movie is to remain true to the stereotyped cultures represented in TOS, a Pakistani character MUST have a Pakistani name.

That's one of the beautiful things about Roddenberry's utopic 23rd century; Russians are from Russia with Russian surnames, Japanese are from Japan with Japanese surnames, Africans are from Africa with African surnames... hell, even the Scot from Scotland is named "Scotty." It's all very easy to follow.

And if Abrams doesn't follow this simple formula, the movie should be internationally boycotted.

Hey, I was just curious. So drop the smug.

Is it really necessary to take that sort of tone in responding? Really?

First off... I said "I'm of the opinion." I base that upon some things that are in public, and some things that aren't, about the sort of character we're seeing.

One particular element that's worthy to note is that this guy's character is really being portrayed as EXTREMELY COMPETENT. Which is a massive change from "Treks of the past" if you really look at it. The last competent commander, other than Kirk, we saw in the TOS/TMP era was Bob Wesley, after all.

The new ship he's commanding isn't a "throw away" design, and he's getting quite a bit of screen time and fairly high billing... unlike the actors who played some of the parts listed above.

I've been talking about a "spin off" idea for ages... long before the character was publically announced. I just think it's a remarkably GOOD IDEA to set a new series in the TOS era, but not involving the classic characters. I think it's a BAD idea to have an ongoing series with the "classic characters" because the longer we see them, the more likely that one of two things will occur:

1) We see no changes to the characters, and the audience gets bored... without the change to see change and growth, without the idea that we don't KNOW what the future holds for these people... there's very little drama.

OR...

2) We see new characters which are NOT the same characters we know, developing into different personalities, living different lives... but who we're being told are "really" the same characters. This will result in a disaster that makes the sniping between TOS-BSG and NuBSG fans over who's really "Starbuck" or who's really "Apollo" or so forth seem like a game of patty-cake by comparison.

Either case is going to be disastrous. The only way to tell good stories is to have give the audience new characters and new situations. I know, the "robotic response" to that comment is "well, look at Voyager, look at Enterprise. Those sucked. Therefore, new characters and new situations suck." Of course, the reason that I'd say either of those "sucked" was not because of the fact that they had new characters and situations, but rather than they had subpar production quality. Give us a well-managed, well-written, well-directed, well-designed, and well-acted show with new characters and new situations and there would be NO COMPARISON. ;)

SO, I've wanted to see a TOS-era spin off for a while. I predicted certain things would happen. And now, I'm seeing the things I predicted happen, which SUPPORTS (not PROVES, just SUPPORTS) my thought process.

Could it not happen? Sure... but I strongly suspect it's something that's on the "back burner" at PPC and CBS (which are different divisions but still the same company in lots of ways), pending the success of this movie, we will see them attempt to leverage the movie into a new series, with real room for character growth and development without starting a fandom-jihad in the process!

Actually, "Sulu" is not a Japanese name, and Sulu himself (in ST IV) hails from San Francisco, USA.

The Asian guy's from San Francisco? Even better. That's right up there with the redneck named "McCoy" being from the deep south and the token alien having green blood and pointed ears.

Hey, I was just curious. So drop the smug.

Hey, it was an observation, not a personal attack. So drop the phaser.

I just don't get why the bridge crew was applauded for its diversity but never criticized for being laden with cheap stereotypes. Not only that but it seems certain fans (not pointing any fingers) have come to expect it to continue, even though this franchise is supposed to take place in a future where cultural and ethnic barriers no longer exist.

So if the Pakistani guy's name is Spanish or Irish or German, that's fine with me.

How is a Pakistani man having a Pakistani name a stereotype?
