So... is Ro Laren banned? And I need to get my story straight

I need this information for my TNG novel. It's set between "Preemptive Strike" and "All Good Things..."

At the end of Preemptive Strike when Ro aims a phaser at Riker and tells him to tell Picard she's sorry she betrayed him and the natives beam her off the Maquis ship, was she not part of Starfleet anymore?

If so, it sucks in a way that she just got promoted to Lieutenant but to be forced to leave. Well, Picard ordered her arrested for treason so I see why she did it.

So, who really were the Maquis? They were federation ships, I know that. But the people piloting them, were they Starfleet cadets/officers?

In my story, I wanted to include Ro Laren and the Maquis, pretty much continuing the "Preemptive Strike" story.

For my novel:
I wanted to do a story about the Mercanaries (from "Gambit 1 and 2")

My so-far proposed storyline:

The story is "Hauntings and Possessions"

Stardate: 47969.3 (because Preemptive was 47941.7 as well as another stardate. Good Things was 47988.1.)
in the year 2370, late 2370.

Sypnopsis (what I've proposed so far):

Part 1
J'Tal's mercenary gang (Baran's sucessor) has been smuggling Starfleet property into the Gamma Quadrant and Picard sends an away team to investagate via runabout. As Worf, Data, and Troi go searching for the science equiptment, they end up getting ambushed by the Mercenaries and Troi gets captured.

Part 2
After recovering Deanna from a brutal attack by the Mercenaries, the away team is headed back to the space dock and they notice she is exhibiting strange behavior. After being possessed, she happens to find herself on a crew-free Enterprise and Troi needs to commandeer the Enterprise and get it back to the space dock. But just when do, she finds herself on a shuttle, being forced to take it back to the Gamma Quadrant at phaserpoint.

So, my story is pretty much like a two-part episode before another two-part episode. I have part 2 all laid out and ready to write, it's part 1 that needs work, hence why 2 is longer than 1.

Speaking of which, I like how at the end of "Preemptive Strike" Picard sits in front of Riker all motionless and whatnot. lol Did his time-shifting adventure already begin?

I suggest you watch DS9 episode "The Maquis." It's a double episode and explains who they are and where they came from. It's set before "Preemptive Strike" and should give you the background story.
There are more Maquis-related eps in DS9, but this one is the "first" and I think it would answer your questions.

I agree, watch DS9, not only will you get more info about the Marquis but also the Cardasians and the Bajorens to get sense of Ro's background and culture.

*cough*voyager*cough*

Watching all 7 seasons wouldn't tell the OP who the Maquis are and where they came from :p Especially since the differences between both crews (Starfleet and Maquis) disappear somewhere mid-first season.

For that matter, all you really need is the first 30 seconds or so of "Caretaker". (but "The Maquis" is much more explanatory)

In Voyager, don't they learn of the Maquis being completely defeated? If that's correct, then Ro Laren could very well have ended up a casualty.

To the OP: the easiest way to get the information you're looking for is to consult the Memory Alpha article on the Maquis (http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Maquis) and watch the episodes mentioned therein, and read the DS9 and Voyager 'Relaunch' novels "Avatar", "Unity" (DS9), and "Homecoming" (Voyager).

I am sure Ro was "banned" for joining the Maquis. However, if memory serves I believe there was a DS9 episode that took place during the Dominion war that gave amnesty to Maquis members that joined Starfleet in the fight. So, Ro could have easily rejoined Starfleet yet again (though who knows if they would give her her Lieutenant rank back). Of course also note that a lot of Maquis were slaughtered during the Dominion War (I think it was by Dominion forces, but it could have been Cardassians, Breen, or a combo of the three). I think that this story was addressed in a Voyager episode, but it could have been a DS9 episode. Therefore there is a chance Ro could have been killed.

All this should help.

Thanks, guys!

There was an episode of DS9, Blaze of Glory, where Sisko helps save some the last remaining Maquis members from the Jem'Hadar. The Federation, however, never gave them amnesty, and the episode ends with the assumption that the surviving Maquis will be sent to Federation prisons.

There is also an episode of VOY, Hunters, where Chakotay and Torres learned how the Dominion wiped out almost all of the Maquis in the Alpha Quadrant. Some however, were still around, mostly in Federation prisons.

So Ro could well have survived the Dominion War after she joined the Maquis. The DS9 Relaunch novels specifically deal with this.

Coincidentally, I just watched this episode today; and I don't get why anyone would send Ro on this mission. It's calculated to push her buttons and make her fail; plus not do any good for Starfleet either.
