SMG to star in Buffy sequel series from Chloé Zhao

I recall David Weber rewriting one of his first books, Path of the Fury (1992), because 432 pages wasn't long enough, and was way too entertaining, and retitled it In Fury Born (2006), because 864 pages with lots more standing around and talking seemed like a good idea to him. I... disagree.

I never take claims that licensed adaptations of TV shows or films to another medium (comics, novels, whatever) are canonical seriously, whether or not there’s ever another filmed production to contradict them — which they almost always do, because the people who make the shows and movies probably don’t even read the adaptations, much less feel beholden to them. As far as I’m concerned, calling such ancillary material canon is just marketing. (Which is not to say it can’t be entertaining, of course.)

For example, AFAIC, there is no actual “Smallville Season 11.” The only follow-up to the TV series that counts in my book is the filmed coda provided by the Arrowverse’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths.”
I always took that more as a way of saying this is coming directly from the people who worked on the show, more than saying that it won't be contradicted later.

These two keep doing interviews together lately, but they never say whether or not Alyson is going to be part of the reboot or not. Honestly, given the friendship these two share, both on screen and off, I can't see Willow not being involved in some way.

During a recent interview with Vanity Fair Italia, Gellar teased the Buffy reboot as well as who she would like to see return. “It will be lighter than the last few seasons of the original,” she shared. “We will try to find a balance between new and old characters. My dream is to bring back everyone who has died, but space will have to be made for new stories as well.”

While the Dexter: Original Sin star admitted she’s “very lucky” she “didn’t feel the pressure that today’s actors feel” with social media when she starred on Buffy, she also wants to make sure the reboot includes modern themes, issues and storylines.

“One of the surprising aspects of Buffy is that it’s always been a crossover series,” Gellar added. “We’re trying to figure out how to modernize the themes of the series, especially what it means to feel like an outsider in a world dominated by social media. What we want to explore are the space-time boundaries that affect society today.”

A show about teens aimed at teens? Shocking!!!!
What I mean is; It won't be for the viewers who watched Buffy back in the day and are now in their 30s and 40s. Think of Picard as being made for people who aren't Star Trek fans, not Star Trek viewers. But on the other hand, they'll bring back all the old cast to attract the old viewers.

Well, yeah, that's the point. Pandering only to the older audience is a losing proposition, because their numbers are always dwindling. The way for a franchise to survive is to attract new audiences. That's the whole reason for doing new series. Ideally you want it to be satisfying for the old guard too, but that's of secondary importance.

Picard was a much better show when it tried to do something new and move the universe forward than when it regressed to nostalgic pandering. Season 1 was a better tribute to TNG than season 3 was, because TNG was emphatically not about clinging to the past and recycling old ideas, but instead focused on expanding the universe in new directions.

If anybody who dies can just come back, there are no dangers of consequences.

"We might die fighting this battle. Until we come back to life, then no problem."
