Small Relief To Arrive from Winter Chill

Man, you poor Aussies. I cannot fathom how you possibly survive the temperature dipping below ten. I mean, that article talked about ice! On windscreens! Preposterous!

Ah another Melburnian!

It's worse here in Gippsland, it actually got to almost 0 degrees last night. My car was cold this morning. :(

Yes it would be worse if you live in the country areas.
I know that when l lived in Wodonga the temp would dip to 0 or less.
But l live near the sea so we have been having teps of around 4C

I've always preferred Winter to Summer, but this is ridiculous. I head down to the pool at 6:00am each morning in a t-shirt, shorts and thongs; this past week or so, after diving in, I've been able to feel my fingers and toes defrosting in the comparatively warm water.

I know when l was on the computer at home a couple days ago l was freezing and trying to use the keyboard was hard
i had to rug myself up with a blanket
it is too expensive to use the heater too much.

RII you make me feel cold knowing you head down to the pool with only a t shirt and shorts smiles.
But if you go for a run or a brisk walk it can warm you up but the last couple of days by ears have been hurting because of the cold wind
Today l took my woollen hat out into the blizzard smiles

It is expected that temperatures overnight will start to warm up. Here in Newcastle, it has been around 3C the last few nights. But at Gosford, the other night it was 0C. I just looked at weather.com.au, it is predicted to have a warmer minimum temperature.

I can't understand why Australians complain about the cold. I live in Tasmania and I don't consider our weather to be all that cold. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Hobart at sea level -2.9C and I think there are many places in the world where that would be considered balmy.

The last time it snowed heavier enough to settle at sea level in Tasmania was more than 20 years ago.

I don't have an electric blanket, I don't heat my bedroom and I usually sleep with only one doonah on the bed. I don't wear mittens or a scarf, though I do have a warm coat and will sometimes put on a woollen beanie.

Well, I'm not Australian, but

a. I could use some winter chill right now here in the southeast US

b. wait... 0 C? That's... right at freezing. :wtf: It's colder than that for days at a time here, consistently. And in the northern US it's below 0 F for long stretches which is... (converting) -18 C, roughly. 0 C is cold, but it's nothing to complain about.

Never go to Canada. Or New York in the winter. :p

There's a reason why I popped in here to make fun of them earlier. :p

I regularly work in a -30C environment, and if anything, will have a light jacket on. So 0C is cold?

OH MY GOD WHAT IS THIS WHITE STUFF FALLING FROM THE SKY AHHHH

(Oh wait... that describes my area... :alienblush:)

With the wind moving at +30 Knots?

Ah, how I miss those days...

Wait... don't tell us... you sailed on the Edmund Fitzgerald, didn't you?

One thing I think I should point out -

Very few Australian homes, even those in Tasmania, have central heating. In many homes only the lounge room is usually heated.

I once was talking to a exchange student from Canada and she said felt fair colder while living in Tasmania than she did in Canada.

How did you know?!!!

Interesting. Must relate only to old homes - my place has central heating and it's a standard inclusion on all the new houses being built in Melbourne.

These temperatures are about par for the course for a winter cold spell in the Sacramento Valley and/or the surrounding mountains.

Never go to Canada. Or New York in the winter. :p

Tell me about it! I lived there during winter 1999, 'most froze to death waiting for the bus when I didn't get the memo about the snow day once, knee deep snow to a 6th gradder is a mild winter up there.
