Has it ever been established just how long time and distance wise it would take a Galaxy Class Star Ship to go from maximum warp to a dead stop.

Would one be able to use this formula to figure this out.

momentum before = momentum after momentum before = (mass before) (velocity before) = (mass after) (velocity after) = momentum after
(mass before) (velocity before) = (mass after) (velocity after)
(1/2) (velocity before) = velocity after
mass before = (1/2) (mass after)
2 (mass before) = mass after

Has Trek ever addressed this issue?

I think I've always assumed that the ship can use the same engines that built velocity to counter and cancel that velocity, PDQ, and something akin to regenerative breaking channels power generated by doing this into the inertial dampeners, keeping the crew from being turned into atomized jelly from the force of the sudden stop.

Or in short - almost instantly.

Most theories (present day) about FTL have the ship basically motionless and space compressing in front or it and expanding to the rear. I don't think that it has ever really been addressed, but I agree with USS Triumphant that coming to a stop would occur almost instantaneously. However I think I remember hearing the warp drive slow down and grind to a halt in several episodes of TNG. It was kind of reminisant of a city bus coming to a stop, and I almost expected to hear the air brakes engage before it was all over.

I always assumed that they had the technology to start/stop almost instantaneously. The inertial dampening fields and the other wonder gadgets kept the crew safe and intact.
