Sleepy Hollow Season 2 Discussion

I suppose angels being in SH was inevitable, but I wish they'd done more to build up to it than this. Not Orion specifically, but the angels overall. Sure, one could just assume the angels are...around. After all, there are demons. But one could just as well assume that there are aliens.

It changes things when you make it explicit. It adds a whole new dimension to their world. And considering most recent depictions of angels, not necessarily a good one.

^Well, Biblical angels were always kind of badasses. Isn't there something about cherubim with flaming sword? And I've heard there's one kind of angel that's some sort of terrifying ball of eyes, like that thing from Big Trouble in Little China but bigger and more flamey or something. The idea of angels being benevolent, gentle entities is more from folklore and Renaissance art, I think.

I didn't mean in terms of the good/evil nice/mean spectrum, but rather in terms of characterization. With rare exception, most angels depicted in recent works (say, over the last decade or so) have been pretty bland. I don't mind dark, but I can't stand stale and cliched. Orion is kinda like a talking cemetery statue.

But to your point on badass angels, I think that's the general state of things these days, as the feathered faction goes. Of late they've pretty much uniformly been portrayed as, to paraphrase Dean Winchester, "dicks with wings". From Walken's Gabriel to Head Six to pretty much every angel on Supernatural and Constantine, Jonathan Smith they are most certainly not.

I do think it would be pretty spectacular if they did show one of those angels with like eight heads, wheels and a hundred wings or something. Probably wishful thinking.

(In all honesty, though, I do hope they keep the halo brigade to a bare minimum in Sleepy Hollow.)

Don't forget about Dominion, where Angels being "dicks with wings" is pretty much the entire premise of the show.

As for the episode, I really enjoyed it. I liked that they did focus so much on the aftermath of Moloch's death, rather than just dumping them into another big apocalyptic conflict right off the bat. Although we did get a set up for one with the introduction of Orion, who definitely seemed to be set up as the next big bad. I thought he seemed like he could be an interesting villain. As cool as Moloch was, I always find it more interesting when a villain is more than just pure evil.

Yeah, I always love it when the good guy is worse then the bad guy. Makes for some interesting television.

Feel free to point out some angels from actual biblical records that weren't "dicks with wings." The best you'll be able to do is find a few who were just sending messages. The ones who actually did something almost exclusively did atrocious things.

Just ask the Sodomites if you don't believe me.

On the other hand, in Sleepy Hollow, Orion was being held captive in Purgatory, so maybe badass asshat angels are the exception in this universe.

Captain Irving lives!

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm glad Irving isn't really gone. :bolian:

Well, he's alive-- at least he appears to be-- but he's not in great shape. I wish they would give that guy a break.

TVline.com brings up an interesting question about the return of Captain Irving.

Could Captain Irving be the Horseman of Famine? He was awfully thirsty when last we saw him.

After basically resolving the premise in the last episode I was very curious to see where they would go next... and I'm intrigued by Orion. I thought he was a very interesting acting choice for the role, he really had this creepy intensity about him that worked well. I also like the idea of an Old Testament angel looking at the modern world and deciding it's time for another deluge.

Bringing back Irving feels a little pointless... we'll see...

Did The Prophecy start the whole dark angel thing in recent TV and movies? If so it's cast a pretty long shadow.

hmmm, i hadn't thought of that.

The Prophecy was ages ago!

The scary thing is after a while 20 years doesn't feel that long, gulp. Though I thought it was more like 15 without looking it up, "recent' wasn't probably the right word, maybe "modern" instead. Did The Prophecy kick off the modern use of the "dark angel"? I don't really recall it before then and it seems that since most angels are dark and remote/distant beings. I actually saw it in the theater originally and it seemed novel at the time.

Oh yeah, tell me about it! I occasionally wonder why something around the house is falling apart again after I just fixed it - oh wait, I fixed it when we moved in in 1992! On a sadder note, it seems like only yesterday we got our new puppy, and she just passed away at almost 14 last month. :(

^^ My condolences. :(

Time sure seems to fly by faster all the time.

Thanks. :(

Time - I think it's because, as we get older, a parcel of time is a much smaller percentage of our entire life. When we were 10, a year was 10% of our whole life! "Last year" was a long time ago, relatively. Now - I'm almost 60 - "last year" is practically the same as "last week". It's relativity!

Hell, I have projects like half-finished short stories and art files which, when I open them to see where I left off, are dated YEARS ago! Sometimes almost a decade! :wtf: How does that happen?
