Sky to shut down Bravo and Channel One

So Sky completed their take over of the Living TV Group of channels yesterday, and have decided to close down Bravo as they feel it serves a similar audience as Sky One (How?) and Channel One aka Virgin 1 as they feel it serves a similar audience as Sky Three and they're replacing it on Freeview with Challenge.

Personally I see this as a move to remove a channel on Freeview that actually has some new content and replace it with rubbish so if you want to see Chuck, V, Medium, Criminal Minds, and Leverage you'll have to subscribe to Sky. And I don't see how Bravo and Sky One serve similar audiences, Bravo skews male with its shows and Sky One is more popularist/mainstream.

^I was hoping OFCOM or OFT would block this, Sky already own too much of the TV market without letting them take over their main competitors channels, but no, as usual they're toothless.

So does this mean no more Virgin 1 on freeview, i think the only program i watch on that was Warehouse....anyway when i do watch TV these days its always between BBC1/2 Ch4 and five with a slight smattering of BBC4.

What i would like to see program wise is that bus from that free holiday vote them off the bus program, plough into the house of come dine with me....that for me would be the first bit of entertainment these channels have ever shown. LOL

^It means no Virgin 1(Channel One) whatsoever. They say they'll be "redeploying" content to their other channels, so I guess that means anything of interest will go on a pay channel anything not of interest will go to Sky Three. Challenge will replace Virgin 1 so nothing but repeats of old quiz shows there.

On Virgin 1 I watched Warehouse 13 and Chuck, was planning on watching V and Leverage but I don't know if it'll be on air long enough to finish the seasons so I'm not sure about checking them out now.

Ah so no doubt your right and Warehouse will end up on their Sky 1 paid for channel...oh well i will just have to wait for it to appear on five or Ch4 in three years time. LOL

Won't happen, Sky seem to buy lifetime rights nowadays. So usually the show is over and done with before anyone else gets a crack at them. The only reason Virgin 1 got them was because Syfy had the rights to first run and don't bother with free to air rights but if gets them they're usually exclusive.

Apparently OFFCOM might investigate News Corp if it fully takes over BSKYB (I always forget that its actually called that.)

As for Sky, I have Virgin so get most of the Sky channels. I am wondering if this is worth the spend though, about the only thing I recall watching on Sky this year was SGU!

^Yeah, I had Sky until about 3 years ago and I decided to get rid when I realised out of the hundreds of channels I was watching maybe 5 shows and decided it just wasn't worth what I was paying.

It would be annoying because there is the odd show I really like that I could only get via Sky, but I really don't watch many of these channels!

Channel One is fuck all like Sky Three. I knew these pricks at Sky were gonna fuck Channel One over as soon as they acquired it. Bye bye, Star Trek. It was fun while it lasted.

Sky, you can go fuck yourselves.

Yep, I have no idea where they get Channel One is like Sky Three and Bravo is like Sky One from... Sky Three could be a good channel if they put their free to air rights to use but they don't, they just fill it with rubbish.

Agreed. Bye bye Leverage, Hustle and the odd one-off treat like Duncan Bannatyne's Seaside Rescue. All that Star Trek was perfect for a lazy afternoon, even Voyager. So glad we can watch shitty game shows instead now.

Because Sky don't give a fuck about anything that people don't have to pay for. They're not interested in keeping FTA viewers happy, because it doesn't put any coin in their pockets. They're happy to fill up Sky Three with shit like Airline, Family Court, Road Wars...etc, because they're not arsed if people watch it or not.

They're gonna keep Channel One around long enough to air the first few episodes of V and Leverage, then shift them all to pay channels, to try and get a few new subscriptions. Stuff like Star Trek, The Fresh Prince, My Wife and Kids...etc, will all disappear into Sky's vault. Redistribution my arse.

^I wouldn't be surprised. V and Leverage are already on pay channels, so undoubtedly what they'll do is what they do with everything, keep the rights and only show stuff they have no use for. So maybe we'll get Warehouse 13 and V because they don't have the pay rights for them Syfy do, but Leverage, Medium, Criminal Minds, etc. they do have the rights for so they'll keep them to themselves.

Ah, I wasn't aware that SyFy had the pay rights for V and Warehouse 13. Ironically, they're the two shows I care the least about, so they probably will end up on Sky Three.

I think CBS Action might end up with Star Trek, they have TOS and DS9 airing at the minute. Which is on freesat, but it means having a satellite dish still.

It's annoying also that losing Bravo means losing the decent videogame shows as well - OTOH hopefully it means no more Danny fucking Dyer

I've actually been looking at Freesat recently, mainly due to the HD channels that are available on there. I just need to speak to my landlord to see if he has any objection to me adding a dish to the house.

Still, I'm really gonna miss those 5-hour Star Trek afternoons on a Saturday and Sunday. :(
