'Skin of Evil': Was it ever explained what Armus was?

Someone else may have mentioned it, but Data in one of the later episodes (I think Legacy) refers to Armus as a "malevolent entity."

I think the writers fell into a fantasy genre trap in explaining Armus, and I never really liked it (quasi energy being may have been better), but the episode is pretty creepy. I always thought that Armus did not have to be EVIL to kill Yar since she did sort of provoke him or it.

I think he is a sort of cousin to that other being from Where Silence Has Lease, that had a similar disregard for human life and seemed similarly practically indestructible.
