"Skin of Evil"...better than I remembered

Evil slime is an interesting concept. It is one of the better episodes of season one. And filmed in the reduced light of the disabled shuttlecraft, Troi is strikingly beautiful - perhaps even more so because of the dangerous situation she is in.

I feel her death was one of the first strongest moments for the series. The fact that it was so random and out of the blue made me fear for the other characters. This was of course when I was watching the series when it first aired and there was no internet to spoil things. I remember thinking that they might actually kill Worf off in Ethics when that first aired.

Its rare misstep by STNG. Slime produced from emotions is a pure fantasy concept and not worthy of STNG's scientific and intellectual approach.

If we want to technobabble it, we could say something like "they created a nanomaterial computer (looking surprisingly like a pool of black tar) and saturated it with evil thoughts as an intellectual exercise", or "they reduced their worst criminals into patterns stored in a nanogoo computing device".

Imposing evilness on a pool of tar is technologically quite plausible, not much different from the real-world precedent of imposing complex mathematics on a box full of chips made of compressed sand - the angle that's difficult to work in is how they could have purged themselves of evil in the process. For that, we have to rely on the strong Trek precedent of personality transfer or somesuch.
