Spoilers Skeleton Crew [Spoiler Discussion]

What a wonderful climax to such a fun and entertaining series! The action set-pieces were top-notch, the character and plot threads all came together very nicely! A solidly executed adventure story! My only real criticism is that the ending felt a little too abrupt. It really needed either a much stronger uplifting moment ala Goonies, or some sort of coda scene.
Indeed, Skeleton Crew was tightly plotted and well executed. Loved that all the crumbs and plotpoints visited earlier had meaning for the final confrontation (like the gun on the school, and them contacting K'hymm) and that every character got a part to play in the finale according to their personality and skillset. Good bad guy as well.

It stands entirely on its own, but I wouldn't mind those characters (somewhat older) returning in a season 2 if it would get made.
Not that it needs to add anything to the lore, but it does add that the Republic apparently had these special hidden, protected mint planets as the basis of its economy (and that Republic dactarii (?) are gold).
Well, as its money printing center. The basis of its economy would be its production centers, as you can't eat money, dataries or gold, nor use it to travel through space etc unless you also have the actual value (in the form of abundant food and lavish/plentiful spaceships) to back your dataries. If the pirates would have managed to bring all those dataries into circulation, assuming they are still accepted as a valid payment method (which according to the show they are), the value of all credits should have taken a hit.
I didn't hate the Acolyte, which had some great moments. But it also had a lot of stupid crap. This show is far, far more consistent and successful in its stated goals.

It doesn't need to "add anything to the universe" to be a good series.
Agreed. The Acolyte had its moments, a memorable lightsaber fight among them, but overall Skeleton Crew is far more even and it lacked the cringe of "the power of many". Generally more likeable characters, too, and while The Acolyte's bad guy was pretty good so is the one from Skeleton Crew. Both much better than, say, the very one-note Moff Gideon.
Let me put it this way: my generation embraced the original SW movie, somehow, despite the fact that it had a total of zero kid characters.

We weren't like "there is no one in this I can relate to!"
To view this from another perspective: adults (like many in this thread, me included) can very much appreciate a series like Skeleton Crew (or its Star Trek equivalent, Prodigy) despite not being children or teens. It's just a very watchable series even for adults, and I enjoyed seeing those characters come to life during 8 episodes. Only the very first episode was a bit slow. That the characters (especially Fern and KB) were intelligent and quick on the uptake helps a lot with that.

Just the one?

Force users pooling their efforts somehow avoided being covered in any of the films, but it's a worthwhile subject and the cartoons have been exploring it since the TCW days.

So I was trolling the pre-release non-spoiler thread and came across this....
This trailer....does not interest me in the slightest.

We've already had Stranger Things and before that, Super 8, shamelessly mining the imagery and tropes of 1980s Amblin films.

Absolutely don't need that in my SW content, thankyouverymuch.

This may be the first SW project I never bother to watch even once. We'll see how the reviews are.
... and then saw this here:
Amazing how the two best SW series (Andor and this)
It's nice to see that people can change their minds. I'm just happy you ended up giving the show a chance! :D

B-Wing beam weapons! *happy dance*

I very much enjoyed it, even if it did seem a bit short. I'd be happy regardless of whether it gets another season or not. But I am still curious about the "Great Work". They never explained what it was or who started it, but they did infer that it was an old project, so maybe not connected to Palpatine. Would be interesting to follow up on that somewhere.
I had assumed The Great Work was meant to be part of the Great Works started by Chancellor Lina Soh during The High Republic, but Wookiepedia has it as separate, so maybe not.
They talk about Skeleton Crew having low ratings, but what does that even mean on streaming? What does that mean for the streaming plan with commercials vs. the streaming plan without commercials? As acclaimed as Andor is, Disney did not get $600 million in new subs for it to justify the budget.
I know the viewership numbers are based on the number of minutes that people watch a series or movie, but I'm not sure how they relate subscriptions to specific movie or show and how all of that connects to what is or isn't renewed.

The Star Wars page has been posting some fun little clips of the kids dicussing filming different scenes and other parts of the show, and I'm curious if that's all they are or if they're part of a longer making of documentary we'll get later on Disney+.

But they still dismissed General Leia's warnings on the build up of "The First Order" & "Star Killer base" along with it's actions.

That literally doomed countless planets in the Hosnian Prime System where the New Republic's Capital was based on.

Billions of lives were lost because they didn't listen to General Leia.
Uh, you're making my point for me. The Force Awakens ruined the New Republic. It's not actually real. It was a writing decision made by bad writers.

Thanks. I'll reiterate, that first trailer did nothing for me whatsoever and actually kinda turned me off wanting to see it.

But SW is probably the last remaining franchise that I'll at least give a chance to. And the show won me over from the jump.

I'm delighted when I'm pleasantly surprised. I'd much rather like a show than hate it!

Regardless of Bad Writers or not, it's part of Star Wars Historical Canon now.

Yes, in this moment, 'The New Republic' shows a bit of competency.

But we all know they screw up on the "Big Picture" problems

The ratings are apparently lower than the Acolyte. So that's not great news for the show. Andor can at least build an audience with that acclaim.

Complacency will do that. We see the foundation laid in Ahsoka.

Well, what do you expect from a show that sux!

Definitely don't watch it!

I heard the ratings are even worst than they were for The Acolyte. Between this and Andor not getting good ratings I think SW is in big big trouble because now even the good shows can't get people to watch. I blame them keeping Kennedy as long as they have. Disney needs to do what Warner did when they brought in a savior to fix their sinking ship in James Gunn. Now the DCU looks like it might be so good it might be better than the MCU soon. They can't just fire her and put another bean counting suit in her place. They need a visionary artist. One who is known for at least being a great writer.

These streaming services are setting money on fire trying to become Netflix. Amazon and Apple can take the hit, but these other services can't. Netflix was first by a mile so they're still in the green no matter how much money they flush down the toilet for the Russo Brothers or Zack Snyder or Dwayne Johnson. A $100 million TV show isn't profitable on network TV or cable, it's definitely not profitable on streaming. Supposedly HBO made a lot of their Band of Brothers money back on DVD sales, but what would happen if it came out today? (The answer is Masters of the Air.)

Thought this was a pretty good run down of the show

Basically, the New Republic wanted to definitely not give off the impression that they were just the Empire with a kind face or a new coat of paint. They wanted to seem like the Old Republic again. So they overcompensated with their military reductions. They also fell into the problems that the Galactic Republic had before the Clone Wars...massive government and corporate corruption. Combined this led to arrogance, complacency, and denial of problems at higher levels. In the early years though, a lot of that was because the rest of the galaxy was not trusting the new boss to not be the old boss and wanted nothing to do with the New Republic. Many systems remained independent or worse, were still part of the neutered Empire that still existed.

The New Republic's overcompensation for on the Military end of things left them having problems covering all of their territory. Sending small groups of X-wings to patrol vast areas in some sectors. Sure, if there was a sizable threat (that was taken seriously) the New Republic has ample ships as a reaction force (like Hera's fleet centered on Home One and others with newer ships seen later over Hosnian Prime). These forces would not be sent out regularly to places to avoid seeming like an occupying force (like the Empire).

There were few capable forces to face capital ships after the Empire was supposed to destroy all their Star Destroyers and other larger warships. So, the New Republic doesn't generally need a large standing Navy. They did keep a Navy, unlike the Galactic Republic, but they kept it largely in one system which is fine against normal threats. One does not generally expect a system to be destroyed in one shot from halfway across the galaxy. Most problems require what they sent to At Atten, a squadron or two of starfighters and maybe a capital ship to carry troops to deal with any problems on the ground. Any remaining Imperial threats would likely have a response like in Ahsoka...three new Defender-class cruisers and their starfighter compliments. That would probably be enough for any normal threat short of an Imperial Star Destroyer and might be enough for one of those with proper fighter support.
