As I'm tickled to have to explain to yet another fellow Trekkie:
Works of fiction do not have "history."
Star Trek IS a work of fiction, even if some of us think it is somehow "different" from all other works of fiction. We think it's different because it is special to us, because it is more interesting to us, because it is more engaging to us, or whatever other reason; this does not change the fact that it IS a work of fiction and therefore subject to the whims of fiction writers. Orci and Kruzman did not even have to justify any of the changes they made in the Nu Universe, they could have arbitrarily demanded a massive suspension of disbelief; that they even bothered to justify the changes in the context of the original universe is a bit of charity that most fictional histories rarely aspire to.
We would perhaps all be a little happier if we stepped back for a while and wrapped our brain around the fact that while Star Trek is our FAVORITE show, it is--in fact-- a SHOW, and the producers do not need to justify arbitrary change/history/background/set changes to their fans. It is, in fact, the vision of the artist that is expressed through the art, not vice versa.
And don't forget the bridge window."Uhm"no. The ship scale was only scaled up for the shuttle bay scene. Disregard that scene and you don't have a 700+m ship.

Oh and:
The Under contruction shot
The 'shuttle craft the size of a letter on the hull flyby' shot
The part where Kirk and Scotty run through engineering with a huge towering ceiling
Chris Pine clearly changed scale throughout the film. He says that he is 6' 1'', but standing next to Quinto, sometimes he looks 5' 11'' and other times he looks 6' 3" -- he varies from shot to shot. It really is quite sloppy and unprofessional for JJ to keep changing Pine's height in each scene and just rescaling him for what looked best in each shot.
Duh. Talk about brain fade. So how tall is he? Well If we assume that the standard doorway he walks through on the E is. . . . LOL

The baby in this instance was TOS, although in retrospect, maybe Paramount and NBC should have agreed on an abortion to prevent all these decades of history that you want to dismiss. I watched the show (most of 'em anyway), and so they are part of MY history ... the significant ones (mostly TOS) have actually impacted my worldview to a slight degree, so those are what I woudl consider 'active' history, not just academic history.
As far as your blather about the artist ... hey, if they're bringing something to the table, fine. Meyer did, because he made it about something again.
But Abrams? I just read a few pages summarizing his rejected SUPERMAN restart from several years back, and it read like this TREK movie in terms of arbitrary crap running the plot and changes just for changes' sake, not for any gain. Some learned prof type oughta find scripts for both of these things and do a compare&contrast, to see if there is just a cookiecutter format he grinds out and hands off to his typists.
Oh, and I used 'blather' deliberately, because they established a page or so back that the mods aren't warning for abusive remarks.

I think it's about time everyone took a deep breath and a step back. There have been a few too many posts on both sides of the argument which were about the person or persons holding an opinion, rather than about the opinion itself.You tell me... you're the one who thinks having Starfleet go from building 200-300 meter ships to ones 700 meters + in the blink of an eye without any corresponding design changes makes perfect sense.
The 700-meter crowd sure is HOSTILE. Always with the insults.

I had closed this last night to allow some time to settle down again for people who were maybe getting a little too worked up over this. Looking at it this morning in light of the sort of personal digs which were flying around a bit thick over the last two or three pages, and in light of numerous requests over the last six or eight hundred posts for closing the thread due to topic exhaustion and terminal rehash, I think I'll just let this remain closed instead.
If anyone genuinely feels that there are still more important details to be discussed regarding the size of the Enterprise in the 2009 Star Trek movie, then I'll invite you to assemble your evidence and your measurements and your nifty diagrams and start a new thread, leaving the posturing and nastiness and sweeping generalizations to stay behind in this one -- those just aren't necessary to a good discussion.
