Size Of The New Enterprise (large images)

So call TFF apocryphal and toss it, you'll need other sources to justify the ludicrous window size ...

We don't have to. We're talking about two different ships. Since the TMP refit and the nuEnterprise are two entirely different ships, it doesn't matter if one has bigger windows that the other. However, if one wants to insist that the nuEnterprise windows can't be huge in the TOS timeframe, we can point to the refit-E's arboretum windows, rec deck windows, and officers' lounge windows even if one wants to toss the room seen in TFF. No reason that they must be tiny portholes. And we know that the TOS Enterprise had windows that could be covered sometimes:

The ship in TFF is not the refit. Why are you talking about the refit in reference to TFF?

Because the other guy is using images from TFF to justify his argument.

Are there any known design differences between the refit and the Ent-A? Besides minor things like the bridge, what color the warp core glows, etc?

I guess the shuttlebay might be different, but we don't get a clear view of the Refit's shuttlebay, do we? Just a shot of the cargo area, with the shuttlebay sort of 'up there' and out of sight.

There's some kind of tiny difference around the deflector dish that has to do with ILM putting a model part in there after something else broke off, but I'm not sure if that was done for ST IV or ST VI, so it might not have been changed with the -A's first appearance.

I think the smart guys at www.hobbytalk.com in the 'movies for modelers' section have got threads on this. Anybody remember?

Those pieces were missing in TVH but had been replaced by TFF and TUC.

Otherwise there are no exterior differences between the TMP-era Ent and the Ent-A, and the Ent-A was referred to as a "Constitution-class" vessel onscreen in TUC, so it is quite possibly a refit Connie.

In any event, since the model is the same, calling both ships the "refit" works as shorthand.

Maybe we just need a shorthand for referring to the refit Constitution and not the Enterprise itself? I propose "reCon." :p

Hey guys... I was posting some of these images over in the Art forum, and they might be of interest. I scaled my new Enterprise model and my old TOS Enterprise model to approximately the sizes that have been agreed upon throughout the thread here...

Now, I don't claim that my new ship is totally accurate... but it's the right length for a comparison, anyway.

Have fun, guys. :)

You know, it really doesn't look that bad. And your model work is beyond reproach, naturally.

But I still prefer the original one you did where they were scaled roughly to the original 366/289 meters.

Don't worry, I do too. Mostly because I can't think of a good reason to change it that isn't completely arbitrary. The plot called for lots of big shuttles in the shuttlebay. Instead of changing the plot, they decided to humongize the ship.

They could have just tweaked the story, but whatever.

::shrug::

good work, but I still can't get over it. I LOVED the new movie... but the more I see the NEW JJ Enterprise the more it irks me. The scale is ridiculous, and the nacells' size and proportions just don't fit.

At least on screen it's no objectionable... I just hope they need to refit it SOON in the new franchise to make it better... and fix the scale.

It is designed to be seen swooping, not static. The creature in Cloverfield looks pretty stupid when it is just standing there, but when it is in motion in the film it does work.

.

I don't get the big kerfuffle here...the re-imagined Enterprise is bigger. Okay...I thought it looked majestic on screen - on opening night, a cheer went up in the audience when it first hit the screen, not a collective "WTF?". I honestly don't understand people having a problem with it.

That said, for sheer aesthetics, I still like the TMP/TWOK version the best. However, as far as the scale argument goes, I for one am glad they had the sense to consider practical matters like storage and escape shuttles when arriving at a scale. Always bugged me that the shuttle bay on TOS seemed like A) it didn't leave much room for ANYTHING ELSE in the lower section of the ship :wtf:, and B) seemed to hold a mere 2 shuttles...though there was LOTS of room for other stuff. At least on TNG they scattered some of those big blue and yellow drums here and there that are forever falling down and hurting somebody...

This is the most nonsensical thing, this idea that there's a "standard" or maximum size for a window. The windows are in the same places and are the same shape, so they must be the same size? What foolishness.

And yes, it's evident in that cover picture and in several shots in the film that the long windows around the rim of the saucer hull are composed of four or five panes arranged next to one another.

The JJprise is several times the size of the TOS ship. The windows are bigger. End of story.

Maybe the refit Enterprise was bigger on the inside? Sorry, wrong franchise...

Why not? When issues are raised about lack of space for fuel, food, air, etc, the response is that the magic of future technology resolves such issues. So, why can't there be a handwavium tech that alters the interior of the ship to allow for more storage space? Alternatively, perhaps anything that enters the Enterprise is shrunk down?

Just saw (for the 40th time) the Omega Glory tonight. I didn't remember this but at one point early in the episode Galloway tells Kirk that "all" four shuttles are still in the hanger deck. I think that is another nail in the coffin that the nuEnterprise is much larger based at least on the 10-20 shuttles in the hanger deck on the nuEnterprise as opposed to get ole TOS Enterprise.

Hear, Hear! I love the new ship. I've been a fan of Star Trek for more than 30 years and I don't give a flying frick how big the new ship may be.

Sorry, but that doesn't cut it.

1) The number of shuttles in TOS does not dictate the JJ-verse number of shuttles.

2) It's not the number of shuttles per se, but the relative SIZE of the shuttles compared to the shuttle bay door and structure that the critical calculations were taken from.

Critical calculations?? It's a movie and Star Trek is not real. You can go to sleep now.
