Size Of The New Enterprise (large images)

Did we see anything in this film to suggest that shuttles any smaller than that were in use during Kirk's time of service?

Here it is:

Looks to be around the size of the TOS shuttle, with the front end style of the TMP air-tram shuttle.

Those are the same big-ass shuttles seen in the hangar bay scene. Furthermore, there is nothing to judge the scale of those shuttles in that image except one's own preconceptions.

Well they do seem to be slightly smaller. But more importantly, they have trivial similarities to the Kelvin's shuttlecraft, don't you think?

How would one know?

Besides, they are still the same shuttles as these:

It should also be pointed out that the TOS shuttle interiors don't fit inside the exteriors.

I'd just like to remind everyone that we are seeing two different shuttle types in that image...the foreground one is the smaller of the two. The background one is the 30' "transport" shuttle we've been using as a measuring stick.

I know JJ wanted a big ship, but there is just something out of place with each nacelle being the size of the sears tower. Star Wars and B5 ships work at this scale because they can be designed for in ship trams. At JJ-Prise size, starfleet ships with the long neck and nacelle struts become unmanageable. You wouldn't be able to get anywhere in time. It'd take half an hour to get to the transporter room.

Notice in that screen cap that the shuttles on the left are the ones with the engines on top and to the rear while the shuttles on the right are the "smaller" ones with the engines on the bottom? Also notice the differance on which side and how the doors open?

The two different types of Shuttles shown, apparently have entrance doors on Both Sides, compare the third one on the left with the second on the right. (They both appear to be the same type of shuttle.) As well as the first two on the left with the third on the right. (again, these are the same type of shuttles.)

We see both sides of the two different types of shuttles in the photo, and each side has an entrance.

You may be correct. But take a gander at the second one on the right. It is definatly different.

ETA: And the third one up on the left.

Again, as others have pointed out - there are only two types of shuttles in that picture. That's it.

- On the left, #1, #2, #4, #5 (lifting off) - and on the right #1, #3, #4 - these are all the same type of shuttle. (boxier with high nacelles, slightly larger)

- On the left, #3, and on the right #2 - these are all the same type of shuttle. (rounder and low-hung nacelles, slightly smaller)

Also, the takeoff picture with SF in the background shows one shuttle of each type.

Both of these shuttle types are fairly large, and of similar size.

Um yes, I think that IS what we are saying. Thank you for pointing that out.

Have we ever saw a turbolift go anyway other than up an down?

Frequently. It was one of the remarkable things about them from the beginning.

The set designer, Matt Jefferies, incorporated a nifty little mechanical gag into the turbolift set which indicated by what appeared to be a rolling bar of light whether the life was moving vertically or horizontally. This effect was duplicated on TNG, and probably other Trek shows as well (I'm not as clear on the details of those).

You left out the shaft schematic in the lift in TMP that shows the horizontal shafts.

And people went from the shuttle bay or engineering to the bridge in one fell swoop countless times. It's not like everything on the ship is in a vertical stack directly under the bridge.

I wish my life was moving vertically. It's moving pretty horizontally right now.
