Size of crew quarters

I'm not sure this was ever stated, but what're the sizes of the various Galaxy-class crew quarters, in ft^2?

I used the Ed Whitefire drawings and did this calculation really quick based on the scale of the drawings. The largest quarters I measured were roughly 1700 sq. ft and the smallest were roughly 750 sq. ft.

Based on what I saw in the show those numbers seem like they could be somewhat accurate. However, I do not think Picards quarters are 1700 sq ft, thats pretty big. The dimensions of the largest quarters in the blueprints are about 17x10 meters, which is about 55x32 feet. Thats HUGE. I don't think Picards quarters are that big.

I'd assume those enormous quarters would be for the serious VIPs (planetary leaders or other such visiting dignitaries).

Nevermind my previous post, I just found two quarters on Deck 9 in the Whitefire drawings that are a whopping 65x40 feet! Thats 2600 sq. ft and larger than the entire ground floor of my house.

I estimate from the show that Picards quarters are about 20 feet wide and maybe 50 feet long, at the most, and that includes his bedroom and bathroom. Thats 1000 sq ft. There is definitely an incongruity there because the Whitefire drawings show literally dozens and dozens of quarters that are substantially larger than that.

I had the same question before on another site.
I used my blue print pages and calculated something about the same as above.
I thought it seemed luxurious to me. :)

The ship is massive. The show doesn't even come close to conveying how big the E-D actually is. All you see in the show are relatively small spaces: the bridge, ready room, conference lounge, engineering, sick back, shuttle bay (not the main shuttlebay) and a few crew quarters. When you really look at the blueprints its almost unimaginable how big that ship would be in real life. Just look at how big the main shuttlebay is in the Whitefire drawings, its a huge expansive space that's bigger than a football field.

I don't have the Whitefire drawings.
I just have the blueprints.
There are like about 12 pages that fold out, they are pretty big.

I just thought it was silly on the episode "Lower Decks" where the guys had to share a room.
There are like tons of rooms. It seems that everyone could have their own room.

Everyone could have had 4 of their own rooms. Wasn't the evacuation capacity of the Enterprise-D something like 4 or 5 thousand people? Granted, you wouldn't necessarily have one person per room- families and partners and all. BUT... most of the Enterprise is unused space for expansion, crew additions, laboratory space, etc.

I mean, Hell, you could set up cots in the main shuttle bay and sleep 1200 people with room to spare.

Also, as they say or seem to indicate, a lot of people don't have a lot of personal belongings, so if there was an emergency, and everyone needed to double up, it seems it could be quickly accomplished.

In my Fan fiction I have my character having roommates and except that 1/2 of my story is based on that, I wish I hadn't done it now.

Ensigns of Command (TNG) suggests that over fifteen thousand additional evacuees could be accommodated onboard, unlike in the later Friendship One (VOY) there is no reference to multiple trips from Tau Cygna to their new location, the complication was the difficulty in getting them on-board in the first place.

This is to a degree supported by the ability of the Battleship Enterprise in Yesterday's Enterprise (TNG) to accommodate 'six thousand troops' (so a standing complement of 6,800 or so).

Thanks, that was what I was thinking of... point being, it's a DAMN BIG SHIP with a lot of unused space.

.. You'd think they could store a few extra warp cores or coolant tanks in some of that space.

Yea, but then it would be like,
"Yes Mr. ggyytroiy we can accommodate your people but several are going to have to room with our extra warp cores and a few coolant tanks and boxes of repair parts for the Holodecks. Please tell your people not to touch any of the items."

Yeah, but I'm sure they'd keep that stuff in the crate, locked up.. lol.

I might be wrong but I think the TNG technical manual also mentioned the 15 000 capacity

According to Ed Whitefire (one of the original designers), the crew compliment on a Galaxy class was far too small for it's size. It was over a football field amount of room for each person- a crewman could wander around for days and never meet anyone.

Commander: Crewman! Why were you two days late showing up for your shift?!
Crewman: I'm sorry, Sir. I was in an unused section of the ship and it took me that long to find my way back.

Even with the guided lights in the corridor provided by the computer, crewman still has to WALK to his destination... and a turbolift could just take you to only yet another empty part of the ship, or be out of operation, forcing you to take the long way around. Galaxy class crew need to get 24th century Segways....

Now i have the strangest image of Data roller skating through the ship whistling 'Blue Skies' ...

Or younger Wesley walking down the corridor for hours (days?) flying some science experiment drone or something... just mindlessly wandering... then a spacial anomaly opens on deck 42 and scares the crap out of him. Takes him another 2 days to get to a comm panel to report it.

Well screw that!
I thought it was cool when I was in the Army, my first 1 man room.
It was 6.6 ft wide and 14 ft long.
I thought that was GREAT.
Damn! I wish I'd have had a football field sized room.
Now in bummed out.:wah:

I never understood why the ship wasn't designed with crew quarters constructed of detachable modules that can act as life boats. It seems every room has a replicator and running water. Plus a bathroom with bathing tub / shower stall and commode. Everything you need to survive until you're rescued. ;)

Plus, it could be set up where multiple crew quarter pods can link up, and one serve as the command capsule, so that it could operate as a lifeboat shuttle of sorts.
