Siskel and Ebert Review of Trek 5...

I think their review is more or less spot on.

Speaking of which, this led me to see their response to Star Trek: First Contact, which I also find to be spot on--and it is a much more positive review. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sz6QVX3uXx0

Are there any other youtube clips of Siskel & Ebert covering other Trek films out there? A Google search has left me coming up empty.

Watching that reminds me how much I use to like Siskle and Ebert's reviews. I might not have always agreed with them, but I liked the banter between the two.

TFF has become somewhat of an enigma to me. On the one hand, I recognize its awfulness, yet I've grown to actually kind of sort of like it. :) I used to hate it with a passion, but I recently watched it when the blu-ray's were released, and it's not nearly as bad as I remember it. Yes the special effects and the plotting are bad, but I enjoyed the character interactions (especially the Big Three).

I don't find the camp fire scene to be that bad. Sure it's silly, but I love the conversation the three have. It felt like three friends just talking. Most the conversations with my friends are far more ridiculous.

Besides if Ebert thinks that this is the silliest scene in "all of Star Trek history", maybe he had missed the entire episode of this wonderful gem:

...or this scene (I know it had not been made yet, roll with me)

Just saying, it could be worse...

I don't think there's anything wrong with the campfire scenes. They're part of the character interaction among Kirk Spock and McCoy that mitigates other problems in this movie for me.

I am not exactly intimidated by Sybok's army of hobos, for one. Klaa's first appearance merited a series of giggles from the audience when I saw the movie. That is one goofy Klingon. The away team uniforms that Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Sulu, Uhura etc seemed like they were made out of Snuggies. Not flattering. Obviously most of the special effects were terrible.

Okay, I'm going on too long with problems and I haven't even scratched the surface. I guess I'm a TFF apologist.

People talk about the camp fire scene being acceptable because you can appreciate it as bonding between three friends we've come to enjoy seeing together for years, but think about how it must play to an audience in a movie theatre without that bias. It's three old men singing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat". And to a fan of the character, Spock's bewildered response is cute, but I can understand why it might make some people groan and roll their eyes. I don't see how it's any better than Data and his crewmates embarrassingly singing show tunes in "Insurrection", which I never see anyone defending as a sweet moment between friends.

Probably because it wasn't a sweet moment between friends. "Row, Row Row Your Boat" and marshmelons aside, there's a really good moment between the three of them at that campfire, when Kirk talks about dying alone. "A British Tar," on the other hand, ends up being more of a "What the fuck?" moment smooshed together with a quick action sequence.
